530i question

They seem to get a bad rap. I am looking at a 1994 530 5 speed. with 169k on it for $2400.
Paint is bad, rest of car is clean. Is it a good deal ? Yea I know it is a sort of dumb question , but want the help of the "PROS"

It's ok, not as powerfull or ecomic as the big V8 it just left people wondering... WHY?

What is it for then... lol to me a tiny lil 3 liter all aluminum DOHC 32v V8 sounds cool..

But in practice is out shined by the 4.0 in all aspects.. That said the 4.0 drops right in for a 540/5

Mein Auto: 90 BMW 535i, 94 Q45a,
With a nice exhaust, those V8's are pretty special. I have been looking around for the 530's too, The price seems decent, but well it all depends on how that 169000 miles was put down. Saw one the other day, below 150000 miles on it. But it was in really bad shape, the guys kid was using it for school. That explained everything. Another one came up with the block recalled, that one was more expensive for me. You could use that as a bargaining chip.

The auto's are 5 speed.. You can find that easy..

The six speeds are MT and rare, but worth the hunt and the wait IMHO

Link? Seems about 400$ to high id estimate... So any negotiation puts you dead in track for a fair price.

I still think a 6 speed is out there waiting for you somewhere.. They have suddenly flooded the market in my area..

3 of them lately. A 4000$, 6000$ and 9000$ e34 540/6 have been around lately..

And a 530/5 with a 6 point cage lol!! Full interior too

Thanks for the link... Im up here in Nor Cal.
A little off subject but whats up with craigslist?
I have replied to at least 20 adds ( emails, text, and phone calls) no one except for the guy who sold me some M-PARS replied.
The owner of the 540 had an add in a local peney saver. I am going to go see it tomorrow, he said he would take 2200.00 will see...... Stay tuned

I like second personally, ive seen it myself.. There towards you..

I drove 130 miles each way to get my e34 540/6 in worse shape and it was the best thing i ever did..

Do NOT settle on the wrong car over an hour or two of driving.. In the long run its such a small fraction of your life.
Compared to the time you need to live with the car even..

I have found the same thing when I respond, since many folks will not post a phone number.
I believe the CL tagged auto-email must go to people's spam folders, so they do not even see our response to the ads. I've seen this talked about on other forums.

Back to the original question, the 530i 5 speed is a very tractable car, makes an E34 more tolerable in my view. Sure the 540 is better, but I have yet to see one in these parts with a manual, almost all are automatics. M60B30 is better by a few miles per gallon in every instance, too. 3.0 = F1 engine, at least until they changed the displacement awhile back. Only reason I can see for a bad rap is that for some folks, 3 litres should be sixes, not V-8. Just avoid an automatic, by all means.

Exactly! Do a long drive & test/check EVERYTHING works. You won't get a better "Hand made" sedan than the E34 (6 or 8cyl) or even the E39's…the first of the BMW 'automated' manufacturing process. But the e34 (I've had my Alpina B10 for 19 years) and there's little to go wrong. Although both model's V8's can have the nikisil problem…do your research! Also the turbo (E39) V8's have a habit of failing. Alpina, that is!
If you get the standard BMW 6cyl (one of the best 6cyl engines in the world) add a good quality power chip for extra herbs! These cars are S-O-L-I-D! And OEM parts for almost anything on them is still readily available…brand new. Try "Pelican parts".

I now see a very nice, 540i with, yes automatic - and for a very good price, locally. Green/tan, 155k, no rust, 4k or best offer. If it was a manual, it might be in my driveway right now.

IMO it would take a MT to almost justify having a green on tan car... (Almost)

Nicer than me missus…" ALP-11" N-E-V-E-R answered back!
After divorce 1997 she 'stole' it and I found MY LEGAL PROPERTY by chance almost 4 months later. Cost for maintenance & repairs... $AUD17,000.

After I got it back I slept on the rear seat for 2 nights…I WAS SOoooo FN happy!

After all the cars I've driven, incl the latest BMW's…THIS is one of the BEST!
For sale...

Ahhh P.S.
The small 'toy' in pic is an exact 1/16 scale model made personally made of wood for me…only one on the planet!
