Manual Transmission Discontinued?

I was working with my CA ordering a 35i Z4 for May delivery and was shocked to learn that I can no longer order the 6 speed manual transmission. Had anyone else heard that it was discontinued? I am so disappointed. Guess I will have to go with the Boxster.

Seriously??? That's astonishing and very sad: the ultimate driving machine, but we won't get to fully drive it.

Another dealer has now informed me that it is only the 35i, the 28i still offers the manual transmission. So performance driving with the lesser performance machine Although, I have heard good things about the 28i.

I hate to hear that. I love the manual on my 2011. That would be a go/no go decision for me.

I came close to switching gears and getting the Boxster, but after driving the 28i again last night, put down my deposit on a European Delivery of the stick 28i. I hope I don't regret it, but the 28i seems to have plenty of get up and go.

I don;t see how this is true. Go the BMWUSA.com and build a car. Clearly listed under "Options" is manual tranny. BMW still offers 6MT for certain models, i.e.: all high end trim lines, except the 35is. Z4 35i, 335, 435, M 3, 4, 5, 6, M235.
Just go online and configure it and bring the print out to your sales person.

I know it is crazy. He showed me the 2015 MY order forms, which is all you can order now for European Delivery, and indeed they have dropped that as an option for the 35i. I am truly disappointed.

OK, I didn't know you were ordering a 2015. Online you can build 2014's so they obviously changed the options. that's a bummer. Glad I got mine when I did.

Indeed. Had I known, I would have ordered earlier so that I could have still ordered a 2014 (35i MT). I do think the BMW site is a little deceptive since you can no longer order a 2014 to have the 2014 build options there, but that is a quibble. It does seem like a bad omen that BMW US is reducing the number of models with MT available (e.g. the 535 earlier this year).

Few more years and you only can buy used MT BMW's or new M's with MT (I hope...)

Best case scenario would be that MT becomes an upgrade option for a price, not a complete d/c. It's understandable...fewer and fewer people want or know how to drive these things and it's just not cost effective for the manufacturer.

I love my s30i with a 6 speed MT. For me, this was the perfect combo, the sweet, smooth I6 engine with a slick manual tranny. It's a shame that the MT is going the way of Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Plymouth. In most locales the trade in value of a car is decreased if it has a MT. It's purely a case of supply and demand. Most US drivers simply want an automatic.

Glad I got mine with MT! As far as I am concerned, just part of the fun of owning a roadster.

This is wild. It isn't just the "is" models like the 35is?

Nope, unfortunately not. For model year 2015 (which is all I could order now for European Delivery), you can only get the stick in the 28i.

BMW will lose a few customers that demand a MT, but the market clearly shows the vast majority of US drivers want an automatic. It is encouraging to see that Cadillac is offering a manual tranny in some of their newer peformance oriented cars. You can also still get a manual 7 speed in the new Corvette. This is likely going to be my next car.

If you want a 2014 why not have your dealer do a search to see if exactly what you want is in a dealer showroom somewhere in the country.

They actually did a search and found that there was no such car anywhere in the West (2013 or 2014 35i, 6 speed manual, M Package). That was part of what made me decide to go ahead and do the European Delivery even though it would be a 28i.

Have had both the 6M and the DCT...the automatic is superior...makes for a much faster car. They used to have to start a car with a crank...times have changed.

Extremely disappointing. Thats a Mercedes move. I'm already having a hard time finding a z4 e89 stick in the color combo I want.

They go and take the fun sport out of the sports car... not everyone wants a paddle bs tranny or an auto. To remove the option from special order is strange. I guess they want people to buy porsches.

Screw faster. You get more control with a stick period. Shifting through twisties is also more enjoyable with a stick. IMO. they shouldn't yake the option away just to appease a bunch of lazy speed demons. Did i mention chasing the paddles to change gears?

I have owned 3 Z4's and an M3 convertible. I don't think BMW has ever delivered manual transmissions for delivery to dealer inventory, I have always had to order the vehicle to get the manual transmission option. I now have a 2014 Z4 35i with the 6 speed manual transmission. Maybe I will need to keep it when the lease expires, since I won't then find that option anymore.
