code reader and JB4

Hi,

I'm new here and have been reading a lot after closing a deal on an E90 N54.

I have a JB4 coming and as far as I know, it will be able to read/clear codes by connecting the JB4 to a computer. But I also see that quite a few people have a dedicated device like BT

So my question is: what would a device like BT give me in addition to what my JB4 already offers?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

It will just give you a quicker way to read the codes but the JB4 will actually do more than a basic bluetooth reader.

You gotta mean Bavarian Technic - HERE is an overview. Does quite a bit - 'cept goose yer ride....

Or, INPA cable. Practice your programming skill.

I believe the JB4 only reads faults from the DME.

There are many other modules in the car that can be read with the Bav tool.

You can also reset adaptions, register a battery, activate individual components for testing, etc with the BT tool.

Exclamation Caveat Emptor!

The Bavarian Technic cable is useful if you ever want to load the JB4 backend flash. For diagnostic trouble code (DTC) reading and clearing, it's the most convenient. However, if your still under warranty, an important feature is glaringly missing, the ability to read and clear the MSD80/MSD81 DME history memory.

I displayed my MSD81 history memory with INPA and found two stored fault codes, one for the gearbox control unit and one for the instrument cluster. Meanwhile, the Bavarian Technic software had no clue that these DTCs had been stored in the history memory. Bottom line, you should nevertheless have INPA and a K+DCAN cable.

Dredging back up an old thread. So, there are 3 different varieties of BT. Professional too expensive so leaving that one alone. The others are a "basic" and "enthusiast" versions. I know the obvious difference is 1 car vs 3 car capability.

Does enthusiast version do things that basic doesn't and are those things important? I only have my car to take care of and don't envision other BMWs on my horizon to tend for. I'm interested in saving the $109 price difference (if purchase through BMS) but wondering if i will miss out on something. Cal, can you weigh in please?

Jb4 uses a lot of the BT cable features (including code reading and logging).
The BT cable will offer a lot more features + reset adaptations and flashing your car for free.
That being said if your aim is not to flash your car with the BT cable, then the JB4 is more than enough.

To my Knowledge they all have the exact same function.
The only difference is the number of cars that one can be connected to.
And the cheapest one does not come with a case

The pro version allows for coding.

The enthusiast packages do not allow you to do coding.

There might be one or 2 other features the pro version can do that the enthusiast version cannot.
