what will you do with the hole in the roof it will leave?
underneath the sharkfin is a hole for the antenna wires to go through, its decently large.

Yes it's possible to remove. But as mentioned, there is a hole for coaxial cables that connect to the antenna under the shark fin.

If you want to remove the options from your HU, you also need to code them out. Some may still remain though.

I believe that antenna is strictly for XM radio, correct me if I'm wrong.

If you don't want the car to be remotely trackable/controllable, unplug the "telephone aerials" and terminate (or simply short) the cable.

You can keep GPS and Sirius. They have no physical means to spy on you.

DOES BMW ASSIST TRACK MY VEHICLE'S LOCATION?
No, the BMW Assist system only transmits your vehicle's location: 1. When the vehicle initiates the Automatic Collision Notification service after a severe impact occurs, 2. When the "Concierge," "Customer Relations" or "Service Request" menu option is pushed or when the vehicle's sensors detect the need for upcoming services and the system automatically transmits service information to your local BMW center on BMW Assist-equipped 2004 and later 5 and 6 Series, 2006 and later 7 Series and 3 Series Sedans and Sports Wagon, 2007 and later X5 and 3 Series, 2008 and later X6 and 1 Series, 2009 and later Z4, 2011 and later X3, and 2013 and later X1, 3. When you request service by pushing the "SOS," "Wrench," "Emergency" or "Roadside Assistance" button, 4. If you request Stolen Vehicle Recovery service by calling (888) 333-6118 after filing your police report (on all 7 Series produced 9/05 and later and all other 2005 and later BMW Assist-equipped and activated models produced 10/04 or later.)

Having the shark fin does not mean you have gps/onstar. Do you want to remove the shark fin or get rid of gps/onstar?

Oops!! sorry, I posted before reading all the replies.

Does that mean BMW Assist personnel will refuse to track a vehicle if they receive a request from the authorities? Or is there a small print somewhere on the bottom of the page?

Yes, there's a special black helicopter assigned to watch every BMW....it's hovering just over the horizon.

I love the tinfoil hat I got with my wife's 328. So stylish, and it quiets the little voices.

You saw them also? This tends to confirm my fears.

There are no black helicopters. But there is a black box in every car, perfectly capable of doing what those helicopters are claimed to do.

Whether the tracking is happening in reality, and how often - that's more of a tinfoil category question. We would not know (and most of us would not care) until the next Snowden comes forward. But the technological capability undeniably exists.

Unfortunately, COD is technically and completely correct. The means are there. The question is, does anyone want to?

If you become a Person of Interest, then yes they will track you via your car, or far more likely via your phone.

It's not so much the GPS, as like it was said, I have a cell phone and no bady would track me anyway.
What it is, is a friend told me that onstar can listen to all your conversations in the BMW....I found that very strange and definitely not very cool. I would not want a microphone in my house or car.
Not black helicopters, I just like my verbal privacy
