6th gear lament

Is it just me or would it have made more sense to make the top gear in the X3s a little more of a cruiser. I find that at regular hiway speed [72 mph for me] the tach shows close to 3000rpm. It would save a lot of gas if this were closer to 2000, wouldn't it? In my driving scenario 5th to 6th doesn't have to be quite as close as it is.

The weight and aerodynamics of the car are much more significant on the freeway. You can see how the 330xi with the same engine and gearbox will be 5-10% more efficient on the fuelly website. Furthermore the engine will be tuned to give the best economy during certain EPA tests. The RPM is not always the primary indicator of the fuel consumption.

They say the engine is operation at its best efficiency at it's peak torque RPM.

You would have insufficient overtaking power if 6th gear was geared any taller. Unlike some (not all) American cars, Germans will gear their vehicles so that there is moderate acceleration ability without necessarily the need to downshift. This was especially the case with only 6 gears (the new 8-9 speeds have less an issue, but are still geared reasonably). This also prevents unneeded gear changes up small hills.
