Smoke at start up and studder

Ok when I start my car after it sits over night a puff of smoke comes out, also when I'm light on the gas peddle it want to stutter. On top of that when I'm going down the hwy in top gear the power dips a little followed by a grown. Any ideas??? 2001 740i

If the OSV, oil separator valve diaphragm fails it will smoke upon start up. The OSV takes oil mist and returns it back the the engine. If the diaphragm had ruptured vacuum pulls the mist into the engine and it burns showing as smoke.

Please make a video of the groan.

SOunds like 2 issues..

1) Smoke- Ebida3 nailed it on the head. OSV failure.. (often you can replace just the diaphram) google search 10 minute OSV
2) Shudder- Dollars to donuts this is a transmission OD torque/ converter clutch lockup failure. I had this recently. I did a test and added "Dr. Tranny's Shudder Fixx" while I waited for a new filter and fluid to arrive so I could change the trans fluid, and like magic my shudder and associated groan and mild surging was gone.. Not even kidding.

It must be seasonal. My '98 did both of these.

The smoke was a one time event but maybe a warning from the engine. I'll have a look. Is the diaphragm available as a separate component?

The tranny shudder is new. I was planning to do a filter and fluid anyway. Maybe I'll toss a bit of the Shudder Fix in.
