Help!! I hit a curb!

Ok do the other day I hit a curb in my 08 335i sedan with the front driver side wheel. It through off my alignment and the brake light is on and the dtc also. Took it to the dealership and they found a bent strut, bent steering rack and a bent lower control arm. To get everything all fixed i was quoted $5200. I made a claim withy insurance and now want to know if I should get it fixed somewhere other than the dealer. And possible with the money I save do some upgrades to the suspension. What are your opinions or anyone had this type of thing happen to them?

I would think with an insurance claim that the insurance company will collect any difference from a lower priced shop, not you.

I don't know how it works in CA, but if it was in MA, I'd find an indy with a lower estimate, pay out of pocket with no insurance claim (avoiding 5 years of premium increases), and chalk the cost up to experience.

Them be some expensive tires!!

I would also be willing to bet that the steering does not need to be replaced, maybe a TRE but not the entire set up.

It certainly isn't a good deal - just the lower control arm and thrust rod they are charging $700 installed, the parts total from bmw is $200 for both parts and it is an easy 1 hour install of them, so $300 would be a good price not $700.

If it wasn't for the steering rack, like above I would just pay out of pocket at an indy, you could probably pick up a used rack pretty cheap and have an indy do it. If you are going to do insurance either way, then I would just have the dealer do it with all new parts.

Ya I find it it pretty ridiculous I have been looking at the parts online I know I can do the struts and lower arm myself but the steering rack is the tricky part. I have seen the steering rack online for like $600 is that right? Also when I hit the curb I was going no faster then 15 or 20mph I got sideways around a turn in the rain and lost it. I was on the brakes so it didn't hit hard. I drove it for a week and it drove fine except the steering wheel being slightly off.

Did your rear tire hit the curb? You said front driver wheel but dealer is replacing both rear tires?
How many miles were on the tires and what brand of tires?

You know, I can understand a dealer markup, but what is the limit here. Contpro SSRs are a bit over $200 per tire. Hell, my BMW dealer sells them for only a little more than that. Mounting and balancing is what $25/tire at a normal shop? How can this dealer mark them up 100% from RETAIL prices that people pay every day and actually look someone in the eye afterwards. They are probably sitting there saying things to each other like, oooh, I'll bet you $50 that I can get this guy for a grand on wiper blades or something. pure slime.

Someone really needs to have a talk with them in not-so-polite way (not that it would really do anything). I guess the issue must be that there are people out there that will pay it, so why not charge it.

I picked up 2 pirelli snow tires for $424 installed.

If I were making an ins claim I would take it to body shop and get a quote. If you want a high quote get a dealer one, but the dealer would not be doing the work.

Get couple of more quotes. I recently replaced my OEM run-flats with the same and it cost around 1100 for the tires, mounted and balanced. The alignment was $99. All work was done at my local dealer. Negotiate! That somewhat forgotten art form that can save you serious $$$.
