Stop start engine feature to save gas

This is annoying. You stop in traffic and the engine shuts off. You apply gas it starts again.
I can afford a $70 k plus car so I'm not concerned about the gas mileage.
Does anyone know how to disable this on a 2014 550i XDrive?
Thanks

The override button directly below the push to start. On your '14 it will remember the setting indefinitely.

+1. But if you use Eco-Pro when you last used the car, you'll have to shut it off the next time you start your car.

ASS (Not an insult ... it's short for AutoStopStart)

Don't take the gas mileage thing personally - we even see posters trying to gave pennies by using regular grade gasoline! The fact is that every auto manufacturer is facing Federal regulations to improve fleet fuel economy or face stiff fines. I'm not sure exactly how many MPG are improved by the ASS (AutoStopStart) feature ... you'd have to ask one of our elected "ASSs" in Washington how they decide these things.

If your 550 isn't already programmed to remember the last setting I had that done on my 535 at my dealer last month (at no cost). And the accompanying s/w update (they updated the software on the "whole car") actually dramatically improved the on-off transition to the degree that I actually use it from time to time. But since it's "turned off" and remembers that ... I have to remember to turn it on when I want to have it enabled.

I think ASS started in response to European regs, but changes in the way CAFE numbers are calculated made them decide to bring it to the US. Just be thankful your '14 will remember the last setting. A lot of what manufacturers are doing for fuel economy these days isn't about appealing to customers, but upping their CAFE numbers to avoid fines. Hence the widespread use of turbo DI engines and electric steering.

When I was living in Europe, a friend of mine had a Fiat Regatta, which had ASS back then. I'm talking 1998 or 1997.

My dealer told me that they have a software program to shut off ASS so i dont have to push the button every time I start the car. That would be on a new 535i

This system not only saves gas, it also reduces CO2 emissions. It's not just about you.

Auto-Stop-Start & Component Wear

My 2014 528i will be delivered this week and will be the first BMW I've owned with the auto-stop-start feature.

I've downloaded the Owner's Manual to read about my new car and this is what is says on page 65 regarding this feature:

"Certain vehicle components may experience additional wear as a result of this system."

Hmm...this is troubling and I doubt that I'll use it very often.

. . . . I doubt that I'll use it very often.
Warning: using the car causes wear in most or all of its systems. Leave it in the garage.

Did the EPA reg. changed this year? The last time I check, ASS MPG savings is not calculated into the EPA MPG rating.

"Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency does not take into account the effects of stop/start technology in its fuel economy testing -- a point the EPA confirmed to The Huffington Post in an emailed statement."

I personally shut the ASS off everytime I start my car, its the first thing I do. I asked my SA if they could program it to remeber last setting and he told me they can not do that!

Your service advisor is lazy. There is a specific service bulletin on this. It canbe set so it remembers the last setting. So if you turn it off, it stays off.

That is really good to know, I did not know there was a bulletin! Thank you! I will ask them again to remember last setting when I go in for my one year service appointment.

I'm amazed how many SAs are uninformed (or lazy, or even incompetent). That's why this the Bimmerfest forum works so well!

Have your SA check SI B12 15 12

Here's a link discussing the option of reprogramming your auto-stop-start

Yeah but cafe is calculated differently than the EPA rating and that article mentions cafe and start/stop later on.

Its not a question of how rich you are and what you can afford, but a question of what BMW must do to sell cars, which is to increase average corporate fuel economy (CAFE) by a certain amount by 2015. At the present, this is the way, in part, that BMW (and other manufacturers) are trying to reduce fuel consumption.

I don't care for the system either, although I found it smoother in an LCI I test drove, but didn't lease.

I'm sure in the next 5 years, there will be more BMWs with i8 style drive systems which will mate great performance with exception fuel economy. Until then, we've go "ecopro" mode and "start/stop" - like it or not.

Does BMW use the starter to restart the car, or the compression method that MB is currently using. In MB ASS, the computer senses the cylinder with the highest compression ratio at shut-off, and fires that spark plug to restart the engine when you take your foot off the brake. Takes some getting used to, as there is a definite shudder - just like a stall - when the engine shuts down. Very smooth, almost imperceptible restart though. And no drain on the battery.

Starter. Not sure why they didn't use the compression method as it sounds like a much better aproach

my 2c.
My 550 could do 26MPG on highway, but it's whole another story driving in heavy traffic. I have seen MPG as low as 9MPG.
To me - size of gas tank is rather small for engine of that size. I do my fill-up when message comes up and it usually takes just 18 gallons.
If I do drive in Manhattan where traffic moving very slow and it is a challenge to find gas station - I do appreciate Stop/start engine feature.
Being stuck at FDR by Brooklyn Bridge with "range: 18 miles" and no gas around is not fun.
