Active Grille Shutters

My horn sounded kind of funny today, so I look into the grille and notice what look like horiz. shutters inside. Does anyone know if the F10 have active grille shutter?

Which variation of F10? And under what conditions do they close so that they can be seen?

You can clearly see them in my '14 528. I've never seen them open, but it's been kind of cold since I've had the car. I am convinced that they are what cushioned the blow when a bird flew into my grille a few months ago and got trapped between them and the grille and lived to tell about it. They look kind of soft and springy.

AFAIK, they only work (close for better aerodynamics and keeping engine warm) in ECO-Pro mode?

I snapped some crappy pictures this morning because you guys had me curious to see what they look like when they are open because until today, I'd only ever seen them closed. After a 20 minute drive I left my '14 528-x running when I pulled into my parking space and finally saw my radiator and the cross bars. Sorry about the dirt, it's been a long cold week. Oh, and I NEVER use Eco-Pro so that's not what makes them work.

I've edited edited pictures. You can see them in the closed position better in this picture. (Just overlook the bird sleeping between my grille and shutters)

My 528 definitely does; not sure why they woukdnt put it in other 5ers. The Welt even had a display about them so I assume they're pretty widespread

Kind of like then from an aesthetics standpoint cause you don't see the radiator crossbars

I had them on my '11 535i, but they always seemed to be in the open position. I assume they might close when the engine is cold? Not sure... I don't see why they would be model specific (528 vs 535 vs 550).

Are you sure the LCI does not have the active grille shutters? I had my 535xi for 2 years and I just notice them. They are suppose to help the car warm up faster and gas better gas mileage.

Both my 13 535xi and 14 550i have the shutters but i've always seen them open. Never closed. They don't even look like they could move honestly.

That's funny because I've never seen mine open until today, but my car is always off when I see the front. They could open as soon as I start it, but wouldn't know. Now, I am going to have to check what happens as soon as I start her up today. I do have to say that my car heats up in cold weather very quickly though.

If you look closely, they're just metal grills without any moving parts and they can't be closed. For some reason only 528s have active shutters.

I actually LOVE seeing the visible radiator crossbars, lol. To me they're as distinctly BMW, as the kidney grills. Especially considering when I was a kid, I'd notice them on BMW's therefore they have a close tie to my "enthusiast" side from the get-go (i.e it's kind of a specific thing for someone, especially a kid, to notice).

It's one of the reasons I like taking a picture of the cars from with the flash on, as you can see the crossbars and radiator.

That's exactly right. I've read that the 528i's are the only ones with active shutters. It probably has to do with focus on emissions (528i) vs more focus on performance (535i) since keeping them open allows for extra radiator cooling.

I have a 535i and I have seen the shutter open and I have seen them close, but never in motion though.

Any idea how they are driven? There must be a motor somewhere.

I'm assuming they only open in very hot conditions - which you don't have as much of in europe

I don't know. It's dark now but I could take a look under the hood tomorrow.

Chances are it's all enclosed. If my memory serves me well I recall that everything in front of the radiator is a completely closed compartment, with the obvious exception of the front grille.
