Cylinder 2 Misfire

Today, all the sudden I got rough idle and got "Service Soon" light. When I scanned, I got this:

I am guessing Coilpack?
Since I have BT Tool, what can I do diagnose this further?

Or spark plug or injector

First swap coil pack to a different cylinder...does the code follow?

Yes? Then replace the coil pack.

No? Then move the spark plug to a different cylinder....does the code follow?

Follow the same procedure as above.

For injectors, you need to replace the seal/retaining clip every time you pull them out. So make sure you have them ready.

You don't need to code the injectors to test the function. Only if you install a new one. But move them back to the original cylinders after testing.

335 or 328?

335, I can guarantee its an injector.

328, I can guarantee you its a coil.

Hoooooold on buckaroos. Take a look at the freeze frame (should be tons more data, but we'll use that). Cold engine. Accelerating. High load. The CEL did not flash at any point and the fault is "not currently present".

I'm calling glitch. OP, relax, you're probably OK for now. At almost 100K though you can look forward to some new parts in the foreseeable future.

328i.

@DSXMachina:
I ran this while the ignition was on, not running.

What more data can I present, to diagnose this better?

Gotta replicate - need statistical certainty! Happen again?

thats what the warranty is for, you cant do it your self for 50 but its just the time sitting at the BMW place that is annoying

"Freeze frame" data is recorded when a code is set. It records all the PIDs at the time of the code. The information is extremely useful in diagnosing a problem. With the additional info you posted about the recurring code and misfire I agree with others that you should check the coils.
As was suggested, swap coil 2 with any other coil and see if the problem follows the coil. At the same time move the sparkplug to a different cylinder (but not the same one you move the coil to). Drive the car. See which cylinder is misfiring now.

And that's the dammable hell of it.....do you want to be without your ride for at least a day?

I say just switch coils; observe. Then:
  • You'll know
  • You'll still be driving your baby
  • You'll be more familiar with you car

Then when you take it in, it's a quick fix.

Know your ride! Benefits are many!

Took it to dealer just to see what they say...
It was just a coil pack...replaced and I was out of there $50 + tax.

I do think I should keep a spare coil pack just in case.

Thanks for those who helped!

I had the same symptoms with mine @ 90k miles and ended up replacing all the spark plugs and coils myself. The plugs first ($20 each)...then the coils 3 at a time ($80 each).

I think it's best to replace all of the coils at once because if one of them is gone, like wheel bearings, another will be soon to follow. The work wasn't difficult except for the cold weather...but I wish I had a warranty.Click image for larger version

2006 325i, purchased 7/2005, with 45K miles.

Replaced the first coil 2/11, and the second 9/12. No others since then. I believe I read on one of the forums that position and heat issues have a lot to do with failure. The first to go was the #1, and the second was the #2.

The $50 was you deductible on the warranty? Don't want to mislead those who are off the warranty.
Post 3, White94RX nailed it.
