F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

M235i vs. "regular" N55 engines: differences?

Is it 100% known what are the exact differences between the M235i and - say- 435i flavors of the N55 engine? Is the 235 additional power and torque from tune only, or is the tune assisted by some significant hardware differences?

Asking because I'm cross-shopping for the 435xi, and I wonder whether it's possible that the M235i specs make it to the 435i in the MY 2015 (i.e. starting July 2014)...

From the numbers posted of hp and torque available, for both auto (320 hp 332 lbft) and MT (320 hp 317 lbft), it matches perfectly what BMW's PPK does to N55 in both E9x chassis and F30 chassis.

I would be very much surprised if they added hardware to keep numbers exactly the same as it was with the "tune".

To OP, if 435 becomes available with 320 hp and 332 lbft that will mean they made PPK available for F32, just like they did for F30.

Some people over at 2addicts claim the engine in the M235i has a forged steel vs a cast iron crankshaft. I don't know where that info came from. Curious if it's true. Could lead to higher tune ability.

I'd be very surprised if BMW put a different crank in the N55 just for the M235. An engine they put in multiple cars, but I guess it's possible. Every manufacturer uses the same engine for multiple models and I've certainly never seen anything that bizarre.

Even when the N54 came out you could get the performance pack installed which would boost the pressure to get an additional 50 hp. It was nothing but a software update. The IS and other sport models have been the same thing, nothing but a software update. It would just really surprise me. But, not having any type of temp gauge is surprising too.

The N55 in the F22 M235i has three enhancements over the normal N55.

1. Software update
2. Revised camshaft
3. Revised exhaust
