M5 as a Daily?

Hey all...

I live in the Northeast and I have always believed I needed an AWD to ensure I (and my wife if she ever uses my vehicle) feels safe and secure and that the car is capable of handing inclement weather (within reason of course).

I've got a 550 on order.... But man... I'd really like to just get the M5... But it will be my daily driver. So.....

Who is using their M5 for daily driver (DD) duties?

What kind of MPG are you seeing? What can of range can you get from a tank?

Where do you live/drive?

Do you regret getting it for a DD?

Any other thoughts, experiences, comments, questions, etc... Please share.

Thanks.

If you fit winter tyres you can use it all year round
I do 20000 miles a year and enjoy every one!
Even though where I live we do not get much snow I have driven it a few times in snow and it is great

I just put 20,000 miles on my M5, living through the worst winter in recorded history. Winter tires are must, but once you have them, you're all set. AWD may help you get going, but stopping and turning depend more on traction, and the winter tires make all the difference!

Hey neighbor, check out the F10 M5 on fire thread. Just something interesting to read given your questions about M5 daily and snow.

Btw, I think I found the perfect compromise with mine for this area. Love it.

Cheers.

As I said, read this interesting thread in this same F10 M5 forum. "BMW F10 M5 on Fire" Just something to be aware of in your case.

Edit
Oh, sorry I'm missing your question. By compromise I meant getting an X5M instead of M5 for this area. It's amazing to drive if you've never done so.

I plan on using my M5 as a daily driver. I live in Atlanta. With the amount of snow you had this year no car is going to be perfect. Snow tires will help. I grew up in Malvern and braved the elements this year a few times while visiting my parents this year. As far as gas milage, forget about it if mpg is a deal breaker you may want to consider another car because its horrible. If you drive onthe highway you can get 20+ butt its so much fun to mash the gas it leads to 12 mpg. Good luck with the decision, forget about the mpg and get the M!
Cheers
Joe

Hey Joe!

I made the decision a while back. I ordered the M5. I was only asking about the MPG to get a sense on how much range I could get out of it. I know not to expect good MPG with 4400lbs and 560HP.... and MY right foot!!! LOL.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I see the point of an M5 that's not a daily driver? That's the whole point- high performance in a 4 door, everyday friendly package.

I would agree. And that's how it's marketed. However, I see value in hearing back from real-world users with real-world experiences. The good, bad and ugly. Helps formulate a better decision IMO.

I am in the same boat. I can only keep 1 car (only 1 parking spot allocated in the condo building). I am concerned about traction with the performance tires in rainy conditions. Are they any worse than all seasons? Thanks,

got my new M5 a few days ago. It is a lease and going to put 15k miles a year on it. Get the M. You will never wish you had gotten the 550, but you might wish you had gotten the M5 when you have the 550i

I had placed my order for the M5.

Also, I will put on winter wheels/tires.

I got an M5 Euro delivery last year, got really boring quickly and 4 months later traded it for a 911; is a comfortable powerful straigthline shooter and has lost a lot of the soul of prior M5's. If you live in Philly I would stick to 550 with xdrive, you only have 19" performance winter tire options on the M5 and if you get a bad winter you will get by with a lot of extra caution, will be manageable, but nowhere as safe as xdrive with a studless winter setup, plus you will get crushed in depreciation. My $109k US MSRP car was sold for about $82,000 4 months later. It was the worse car purchase I have ever made, and I was as excited as you are before getting it. I know each has its own experience and I do not mean to be contrarian, but this was mine and share it to keep the balance. I do wish I had gotten a 550 instead, the premium is just not worth it like it was in the past.

Well, I will experience the M5 as a DD for myself. I don't have a job in which I HAVE to go out in inclement weather. BUT... if need be, i'll pick up another SUV. (My wife has an X5).

I'm not expecting anything more than a luxurious sedan that can haul 4 people, has enough power to make evasive maneuvers and once in a while have a spirited burst on the highways. I don't expect to be canyon carving in a 4-door, 4400lb sedan. Not sure why anyone would think it was meant for that...

I believe the M5 will give me exactly what i'm looking for. And if not, no big deal... i'll simply move on.

Thanks guys!

You should be fine with that set of expectations. I have driven mine for the last year and it's just at 12,000 miles. It's great for road trips and around town. It does almost 24mpg on the highway but only around 13-14 in town. Right now my average is 15.1 with about a 50/50 split on the miles. I reset it every few thousand miles. The last time I reset it was down to 13.1 mpg but that was mostly city driving.

The car is faster than anything you will encounter on the highway and let's you get around any annoying slowpoke as long as you have a crack and I mean crack. Since it gets from 50 to 70 in two seconds and similarly it will go from 70 to 100, you have the ability to keep from being cut off and to zip in and out of those holes other drivers attempt to close in order to keep you from getting in front of them. I love that aspect of it.

Then of course there is the comfort of the seats and the B&O sound system. In addition to that, plenty of people tell me it's a good looking car. I have gotten plenty of compliments on the car from people who know nothing about cars, they just like the look. I did just buy the Dinan exhaust because I am tired of the weak exhaust note. I probably should have done this sooner but gave it to myself as a bday present when I had the car in for it's 12,000 mile service on Thursday. My bday was yesterday, I am 58 now.

Do not be afraid to take the M5 canyon carving. I have done it and it will do it and do it very well I might add. Keep the mdm on and put the Edc in sport plus, steering in sport, and the suspension in sport plus and enjoy some fun back road driving. It will handle it.

Just a heads up, most of these high performance sports cars depreciate heavily. Porsche is worst than bmw, check out the $ 150,000.00 to $ 200,000.00 Porsches, the depreciation is terrible. If you are worried about depreciation buy a 1 series or 3 series. As far as vehicle soul, the f10 has it all over the e60 m5 and yes I love the e39, but it performs better than the e39 as well. The big problem with the f10 is that most people that buy it can not handle it on the road. Driving skills are just not there. They need a small car to make themselves feel good or awd to make them think they can drive.

Lol... I would agree with your comment about skills. Not saying I have any either just to be clear. I know what I CAN and CANNOT handle/do.

Yeah, and a daily driver vehicle WILL depreciate. Exactly why I lease. It's not an investment. It's purely an operating expense to me.

By the way I like the space gray. Great color choice, I have had it before.

Thanks. Im stoked. Space Gray, Sakhir Orange and black Wheels and trim... And of course dark tint. Should look sinister. At least as much as possible without being black.
