Paging smolck Suspension Refresh Questions

Hello all, I'm putting together my list for my suspension refresh and just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything glaring

Koni Yellows
Front : 8741 1390LSpor / 8741 1390RSpor
Rear : 8040 1271Sport

Hotchkis Swaybars
22825(SKU from Hotchkis website)

Smolck I know you pretty much have the exact setup can you confirm these numbers?

Yep. Importrp.com has good prices.

And I don't have the sway bars, mine are stock. Av98 does though.

I've ordered the components, also gonna grab the Rogue RSM kit. With their kit I should be able to adjust the rears without trouble correct? I'm kinda wondering if I should have gone for the top mount adjustable rears. I feel like I'm gonna be playing around with the settings with the upgraded swaybars and shocks/struts handling is gonna be different from my 120k zhp suspension and stock swaybars.

Paging smolck Suspension Refresh Questions

Hi Gryp,

The Rogue RSMs should make it easier to drop the Koni yellows for adjustment but not as simple as the TC Kline Koni yellow top adjustables.

For me, I set my suspension for track and loved it so much I left and lived with it till now; 5 years later.

Most would think this setting is brutal at 1/2 fronts and 3/4 rears from soft but it suites my driving style which is aggressive by most standards.

Don't forget the reinforcement plates for the front shock towers; prevents from mushrooming.

So I second guessed myself, and rethought the rears. I'm going to want to mess with this suspension setup easily and as such I'm going to spend the extra money for the tc kline top adjustable rear shocks. Being able to dial adjust all four corners will serve me in the long run I think as I can't see myself constantly pulling the rear hardware to adjust stiffness.

Gonna have to delay the project timeline a bit as it's nearly $250 more/pair on the project for the tc kline version of the yellows.

Good results ordering from IRP. Ordered Sunday night and the front Koni yellows and Hotchkis swaybar kit arrived today. Had them check and the top adjustable rears can only be sold thru TC Kline even though Koni manufactures them, apparently TC Kline helped in the design/development and basically are the sole retailer....time to save up some more for those externally adjustable rears.

So what's the general consensus on reusing(120k miles) or replacing the shock mounts, I'm kind of inclined to replace them since I'll be in there anyway but am interested in opinions.

I already have RSM and shock tower reinforcement plates slated for the build. Probably a front strut tower bar in the next 4 mo or so.

What else am I not thinking of fellow festers?

You need new shock mounts, no question. Still think your nuts for paying the extra cash for the top adjustables. I spent a Saturday setting mine up, I just left the trunk disassembled and drove and changed and drove and so on. Once I had it dialed in, I only change it every now and again. Usually after watching racing n TV.

I can do it in 45 minutes max, without a jack.

+1 on RSMs. I like Rogue's setup and reinforcement quality.

Hotchkis swaybars - IRP

Looks good Gryph. Some minor things to add if you don't reuse em are the shock boots.

Would you recommend replacing the shock boots? How would I visually be able to tell if they need replacement. You'll have to forgive me I've never been a suspension guy and as such have limited experience with components. Obviously they are the rubberized/abs accordion-looking sleeves that fit over the shocks, in good repair what do they look like versus in need of replacement?

Yes, especially if the boots are ripped and falling apart. Usually happens with higher mileage cars like mine- 88K for me at the time. Keeps the dust from the sliding pistons too.

I'm looking forward to it, it should coincide with swapping my summer tires back on so I'll go from my 120k mi suspension with winters to the new setup with the PSS.

The rears call the dust boot a protection tube correct?

Front: 331331094749
Rear: 33521136283

I can re-use the bump stops correct?

Yeah, they're cheap on one of the vendors I'm getting other items from, so what the hey...in there anyway and hopefully not for a long time again.

EDIT: Had my first window regulator start to go on me after two e46 ownerships with over 300k mi of combined ownership...way overdue I suppose.

Yep you can reuse the bump stops, I did on mine. I think the Konis actually come with another set also.

Suspension refresh with Koni yellows, Hotchkis sways and PSS = Twisty assassin. Loved my setup.

Don't forget the alignment, very important to dial it in. Take it to a shop that uses weights, helps properly set it up.

And they have arrived:

Just to be clear to everyone, I admit that I paid more for the rear top-adjustables pretty much as a pure laziness upgrade so I wouldn't need to pull the rears to adjust.

All components are installed and aligned. Unfortunately it's conditions suitable only for waterfowl at the moment, so a real test will have to wait until better weather. Here's the alignment report for those who are knowledgeable(not me). The car already is noticably better handling over bumps and into corners.
