Replacing struts?

Hi all, I am thinking of replacing my struts with the KW V3 coilovers. When do must folks replace struts? I am at 76k miles on my 535xi, driven on mostly crappy roads here in Maine. The car feels a little clunky compared to last year, my mechanic says all suspension pieces are good, we did replace a tie rod end and a rear ball joint last month.
What about suspension bushings? Is that an expensive swap out? Thanks every body!

Yeah I'm curious about this issue as well. My car rides like crap, in my opinion, because the roads here are pretty crappy. I'm not sure where to start with replacing parts. My indie says the suspension doesn't show much wear on it (123k now, not sure what previous owner replaced) but the suspension just clunks and makes noise and the ride is kinda choppy. I was thinking on starting with control arm bushings too.

123,000 miles on my 528xi, original struts. Still seems to ride & handle fine. I wouldn't waste the money.

I have 88k miles in my 550 and my shocks are definitely toast with a floaty ride and replacing soon. IMO, shocks and struts wear out gradually where you may get used to poor handling and not notice it unless you drive aggressively. There isn't a specific mileage to use for replacement, it depends on how the car was used. I did shocks/struts and most of the bushings using new control arms in 540 around 100-120k miles. If you're keeping the car, I'd do shocks/struts and only change bushings/control arms when needed as it gets expensive. I did front wheel bearings at same time (125k) as the labor was common although they were not bad.

On my previous 530, I got H&R springs @ 50k miles. After that the stock struts lasted about 3 months, so I switched to coilovers. Struts are a wear item, and when you will need to replace them will depend on your driving and the condition of the roads in your area. Someone in NYC, for example, would probably need to replace them quicker than I do in SoCal where the roads are smoother.

Are you doing the work yourself? I have purchased the control arms, wishbones and tie rod ends but have not replaced yet. I am going to replace shocks with Sachs OEMs. I want to do all the work at once.

There are a few parts that I am not sure but I am considering replacement:

1. Shock mounts on all 4 corners
2. The coil springs

I am 204K on original shocks and coils, but has been mostly flat Florida roads.

I have replaced shocks/struts with coilovers on about 3 dozen E60s now. Front shocks are easy to unbolt, HOWEVER, if you have sport pkg - disconnect the sway bar end links before removing the strut. You have to push down fairly hard on the suspension and the endlinks will pop out and need replacing if not disconnected first. The rears are only harder because I have really large hands and it's a pain to get to the top bolts of the shock since they are located under the parcel shelf in the back (about 2.5 inches of access), just remember to remove the foam cover over the bolts without destroying it, you will need to put it back.

The coil springs are over the shocks/struts all around. If you are replacing the shocks/struts without replacing the springs I would suggest replacing the washers and nuts and the bump stops - for peace of mind.

I am also looking at doing the struts soon on my 07 550 sport. I will likely be doing shocks/springs/bumpstops/upper strut mounts on all four corners with OEM. I have 103k on the clock and can tell the suspension is a little tired, though it still feels ok.

I am undecided if I am going to stick with the "Sport" parts, or upgrade to the "MSport" parts. From everything I can tell on RealOEM, the only differences are the struts/springs/bumpstops.

As others have said, the time the struts will last is very subjective and depends on a lot of variables. Every other BMW I have owned in my life needed front struts by 100k easily.

There are DIYs on how to replace struts/shocks on our cars in other forums. For example: go to 5series.net and in the DIY section search for Rizbel, he's a member that posted a great DIY with pics on how to change them. Good luck, it really isn't that hard.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to provide some thoughtful responses.....I have decided to go with the KW V3 setup, I wanted to lower the car slightly anyway and I like the idea of adjustable rebound and compression. The reviews have been top notch on these units......except the price!,!!

I realize this is and old thread. Has anyone done a DIY on replacing struts on a 535xdrive. Bentley manual calls out for removal of the front axel from the carrier housing. I was wondering if this is a big deal or not.

Thanks
