Have you looked at the parts database (like realoem.com) to see the various trim pieces for the center console? I have a 3 shallow trays (#11 in 1st diagram is in the middle position instead of the mobile phone eject box) beneath the top part of my center arm rest...and the deep storage tray when the whole arm rest is lifted (see #1 in second diagram below).

You do know that there's 2 sections to the center armrest, right? One handle releases just the top half, and there's another release that lifts the entire armrest up that gives access to a larger/deeper compartment below the center arm rest.

(I have #1 below my center armrest...some have the cass or CD storing (#4))

I keep the 3 online part databases bookmarked for times just like you mention...they may go down for maintenance or other issues right when you need the info...so having a back-up is a good thing. Plus the one site (bmwfans.info) goes further in keeping old part nbrs that are no longer available so that you can reference back to them...which is really handy when doing part cross-reference searches.
  1. http://realoem.com/bmw/select.do
  2. http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/
  3. http://bmwmobiletradition-onlinecom.x-shops.com/bmw/

You asked if "newer model" armrests fit...I'm not sure if you mean newer e53 X5 models or other generation X5s, or any other model BMW. I doubt it...but if they do...you can use the part nbr application search/part cross reference search feature of any of the above websites...and it will list all BMW models that use the 11 digit BMW part nbr you're searching.
