how to program garage door opener

Okay, I have the 2013 328i xDrive. The only options I got were moon roof, heated seats and walnut trim. However everywhere I look I see that the universal garage door opener comes standard in this car. I have three buttons on my rearview mirror but when I press them nothing happens. Can someone shed some light on what's up here lol? Should I take it back to the dealer?

Have you looked at the instructions in the owner's manual?

yes I did, the manual describes how to program the opener. When I press the buttons on the mirror I don't see any LED lights going off like you're suppose to. It does say that the feature should come standard

Then i suggest taking your car to the dealer for service. The LED is supposed to light up.

Probably doesn't have the power cable connected. It's an easy fix by the dealer.

Ok the lights coming on and I followed the directions to the tee... When I press the button I programmed the led blinks fast but the door doesn't open. I tried holding down the button and whatnot but still nothing. Reprogrammed it and nothing. Batteries in the garage door opener are good. Idk what the deal is.

I have an email that my dealer sent me with a set of instructions attached. I did not have my garage remote with me when I picked up the car so he sent the instructions and I had it set up in minutes. If you'd like them PM me and I can forward to you.

Do you have a "learn" button on the garage door motor?

Has a ladder been employed in this exercise?

Garages use a "rolling code". This requires that after programming the button with your remote you need to reach into garage opener motor and push the "learning button", you then have 30 seconds to press the button on the UGDO until you get a solid light. There are many videos on YouTube showing this process.

By the way, its not 100% universally compatible. Some garage openers use different frequencies. And even BMW supposedly has two different frequencies for the mirrors. If you followed the directions and it still doesn't work, it probably never will no matter what you do

My owner's manual said to clear the memory first by holding the two outside buttons. Then the car was supposed to be ready to learn the code, either from the remote control for the garage door or from the opener itself. Neither worked. Then I tried the instruct sequence from the opener without clearing the car's unit, and that worked.

I am old enough to mistrust myself with technology, so that I do something that my kids and their spouses do not do: I read the instructions. In this case, that was a mistake. The kids just keep trying things until something works. When I remembered that ploy I succeeded. Good luck!

This is exactly what i needed to do to program the garage door opener on my 2014 F31. Strangely enough, it was a lot easier to program the garage door opener on my 2002 Audi A4.
