The guy behind me gets pulled over ...

... and, frankly, I'm not sure why. He seemed to be doing the same thing as everyone else on the road, including the State Trooper next to me.

At first, I thought the local officer was pulling me over, and the only thing going through my head was "What the hell for?"

Must've been gaining on you a bit? Either way that's a pretty ballsy officer stepping out in the road like that. I had a State Trooper pull me over years ago the same way and his first words were "Thanks for not running me over." Didn't get a ticket and I can't help but think part of the reason was because I was actually paying attention to him. The things those guys see.....

Uh, do you have forward and backward view cameras recording whenever you drive?

Yup. Because when the officer says "He did ......" and you say "No, I didn't.", you'll lose that argument every time without proof otherwise.

Frankly in the LEO community you were not the fish in the school that got picked. My guess is that everyone was running at a speed that allows LEO to pull you over. I see it happen often and my LEO friends tell me it just was not that particular car's day.
Now if you are running way over then you are the high point boy of the day and get to pay the local city-county-state more tax money...

Every "case" like this convinces me to get a GoPro dash cam...I've been thinking about it for many months.

I've had two instances in the past four months where it could have come in handy:

1. I was taking a 'green light' right turn, but the pedestrian light was red on the crossing...nevertheless, three young skateboarders came out of nowhere in front of me and I jammed on my brakes just in time. Scared the *ell out of me...close call.

2. I observed a woman on a cross walk with her baby stroller making a legal crossing while an SUV made a "screaming" turn in the same intersection barely missing the woman. It is illegal in CA to enter the intersection while a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. I would love to have taken a "pic" of this SUVs license plate. I thought of chasing her down, but had second thoughts about it.

On the other hand...the CHP doesn't allow a GPS, or a camera in the middle of the windshield, do I would have to configure it according to CA regulations...perhaps 'offset' it to the passenger's side?

Front: Lukas LK-7200 dashcam
GPS speed, GPS location, G-force measurement (impact recorder), motion detector (parking mode), designed as a dashcam
$150 - $175, plus an SD memory card and inexpensive CPL filter.
http://www.amazon.com/LUKAS-LK-7200-...keywords=Lukas

Rear: Mobius Actioncam, Wide Angle version
Mini camera designed for RC modelling. Since I have all the other dashcam features on the front, this is a cheap solution for the back.
$75 - $90, plus a mini SD memory card and USB cable for power.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Both have a "looping" mode where they fill the video card and then erase the oldest file to keep recording. A 64GB card holds around 8 hours of video. I combined the two videos in Adobe Premiere.

That's what I thought! I nearly came to a full stop, but as he slides out of the picture to the right, he started waving me past. I was sitting there thinking "What the hell did I do??"

The rear is. The front is designed as a dashcam.

I wish I could push the rear camera closer to the back glass to get less seatbacks and more outside, but if I move it closer, it creates a fair amount of interference on the AM band of the radio. The back antenna doesn't like having an electrically noisy device close to it.

Mine is tucked up behind the mirror on the passenger side, to the left of my radar detector. 95% of it is blocked from my view. I lose the GPS speed display on the rear of the dashcam as it's blocked by the mirror, but I don't mind. Biggest issue is that the mirror mount creates a black blob in the upper left of the picture (you can see the bottom of it below the rear camera inset), but I can live with that.

I think these are better choices than a Go Pro. The Go Pro takes better video, but it's pricier, doesn't do the "Auto Record At Power On" function as well as these, and it's a lot bigger. I also don't know if you can get it with the GPS function or if it does the "erase oldest to keep recording" function.

Our local "progressive" cities are in love with the money brought in with Red Light Cameras including Right on Red turns. To further enhance revenue these cities have shortened the yellow light cycle. All contested tickets are reviewed by the local police dept.

One more reason to have your own dash cam front & rear.

Some of our smaller and more redneck police have a trick they pull when you drive through their burgs as night. They follow you with their brights on. When you speed up they pop you for speed violation. THEN you get to argue your case in front of their judge.

Dash cams can't hurt!!!

I just ordered a garmin dash cam, the 20 model.. I like it since it has immediate playback on the device and a few other really cool things like G sensor (impact record) to take pics and record and won't re-loop over that info. and gives GPS coordinates of the recording =) 249 and free shipping.. no brainer.

Nice setup. Your on the road often, you can't take chances.
For a pullover, could be seatbelt, cellphone, inspection lapse. Looking for a suspect under the guise of a speed trap

I was the guy in the back who got pulled over. I am following a guy in a Honda. I am in my Z4 with the top down. Cop lets the Honda go and jumps out in front of me to motion me over. To put it nicely the cop who pulled me over was a bit over the top to the extent that the cop writing me the ticket apologized for him. I have no doubt I was the "fish in the barrel" because of the car I was driving. I also have no doubt there was no way the cop lasered me due to the angle and my proximity to the car in front of me. While I was getting my ticket another car came barreling down the street and the cop jumps in front of him such that the guy has to lock up his brakes to keep from hitting him. Never seen any cop so willing to put himself in harms way to give a ticket.

Looks to me like the Statie wanted ANY car to obey and he got the one that was able to stop for him. Maybe he was a little constipated because the truck and your car couldn't stop?

That wasn't a Statie. Looks like a local LEO.

What amazes me is that any LEO would be stupid enough to step out into a traffic situation just to harvest a few dollars. I'm sure his superiors placed him in that position but it proves what some law enforcement departments will do to load the coffers.

IMHO, Damn shame.

They've changed since I lived there, yeah, looking at the vid again freezing the frames ... not too bright stepping in front of cars; people have a difficult enough time paying attention these days.

How much did that cost? I would LOVE to be able to have a recording of the next "encounter" with a cop.

I'm betting that if your in car camera and speed read out say you were doing 35 mph but the cop says you were doing 52 mph that the judge is still going with the cop and finding you guilty.

At least at that point any pretense of it being anything but a money making kangaroo court would be eliminated and maybe the sheeple would actually vote to change the system.

Meh, probably not.

Not that I've become jaded and cynical or anything.

I was in Rhode Island at the time. The RI State Trooper was in a silver SUV to my right. You can see him in the rear view as we pull away from the light. He moved up the ramp to the highway as we left.

The one who pulled the guy over was a Johnston, RI, LEO.

Maybe $350 all-in for both cameras plus memory cards and cables. Not too bad.

Cool, what brands and models, if you don't mind my asking.

Your read out said you were doing 41-42 mph, the speed limit sign you passed was posted 35 mph. Assuming the guy behind you was doing about the same speed, do you suppose they gave him a ticket for doing 7 mph over the limit?

Here in my little over policed affluent suburb the speed limits are set so low that the cops can stop anyone any time. Sometimes I obey the limits just to prove the point that they are set so low as to be aggravating and distracting to other drivers.

The fingers fly, until I boost back up to "normal" speeds.

did he have another state's plates? LEOs like those ones as they tend not turn up for court dates. It is tough to stop NY drivers in CT as they do not look in the rear view mirror between Bridgeport and Mystic...or look right to see if there is still a lane there...or understand the intersection layout at Exit 75...

Here in Indiana the state troopers do it on Interstate 465. I wouldn't try to cross I-465 unless my life was at stake and these guys walk out in front of moving traffic and hope that their extended hand will stop not only their target but the drivers behind that car.

I hope they have good life insurance benefits.
