Mein Auto: 2003 530i
S4 or 335xi

It is time for me to get a new car, and coming out of a rough Illinois winter, I am considering AWD. My first choice is a 335i x-drive and I have found a manual 2008 sedan in my price range. However, I also found a 2007 manual Audi s4 for the same price. I will be coming from a manual 530i sport, so I was wondering, between the two, how they differ regarding performance, cost, reliability, and any other important factors. Any advice will be appreciated.

Audi nose heavy. If torque vectoring LSD, prob addressed, but does it have that?

BMW balanced. Yes.

I purchased a 335i over the S4 but the S4 was very nice. The Audi felt a bit more refined where the BMW seemed to connect me more to the road. Both are very nice.

I will add that I previously owned a 535 and going to the 3 I do miss the size and comfort of the 5 more than I expected. The sport suspension is awesome on my 3 but there have been times, during my commute on trashed roads, that I miss the smooth feel of the. 5. Of course everyone likes different aspects of these cars.

For winter driving, you will find the S4 to be more refined and capable than the xi. If you put snows on it, the car will just about drive up a tree.

S4, the interior, sport diff and B&O sound were nice additions by Audi. I believe the one bad weak spot on the Audi was the plastic water pump housing and I'm sure there are aftermarket aluminum housing to be had.

Have you ever even driven an Audi S4? Nose heavy - don't think so.

Y'know, the newer 6 cyl's have better spec, but older models - V8 - were schnozzed.

Gotta say I haven't driven an Audi since easing into a 335i.

hmmm...I've never driven any Audi that wasn't nose heavy. That would include the A4, A6, A7, and A8.

I had a new 328i loaner today. I'm not certain if it was nose heavy or just had a big nose that i couldn't see over at all.

IMO, one can't compare the driving characteristics of the A4 to an S4. We have an '11 S4 and it feels very well balanced end to end.

I test drove a Golf R and I agree that you can feel the car being pulled rather than pushed.

I enjoyed it thought and felt it was a fun car to drive. I tested one with a stick.
