Cost for alignment?

Recently put on some 19's, want to get an alignment done to ensure proper wear on my tires. My local BMW dealer is charging 160. Is that too much? Id rather pay a little more and go to a dealer, but is that WAY too much? Ive heard prices half that but they are all at midas and sears etc, places I'd rather not go to.

Normal for a dealer.

Though if you look at indy shops, they will charge a bit less, around $80-$150 for a standard, oem alignment.

They can go up to $400 for corner weighing, coilover height adjustment, adjustable arms, etc

That is a good price. Around her in MD it is usually about $179 on special and the normal price is $250. Those are dealer prices.

Many moons ago my SA admitted to me that the dealer service subcontracted out the work to a tire shop which is only 1 mile from me (the dealer is 2 miles from me), where I usually bought my tires! He told me that simply because if I wanted dealer to handle alignment, they could not turn around the car as rapidly. He acknowledged their somewhat higher price was associated with driving the car over, dropping it off, riding back, then returning to pick it up and drive it back to the dealer -- all necessitated by the fact that they did not have the suitable alignment equipment in their own shop! Hence, none of my mutiple BMWs have had 'dealer alignment'.

its weird you say that because thats what the guy said to me. he said the alignment equip. was down the road at their "sister" shop. there is no other bmw dealer on cape cod besides this one. hopefully this solves the problems I've been experiencing with the front end riding a little rough.i don't even want to drive it until i get it squared away.

Cheap for a BMW Kinematics alignment - you might ask if they're quoting that.

But, what is alignment on a 3? Toe & Camber @ 0 thrust angle, front & rear. Ain't rocket science.

For alternatives, check TireRack authorized dealers for BMW tire replacement. They are pre-qualified by TireRack and often are experienced w/BMW alignment.

Last part's important - experienced w/BMW alignment.

If this is your first alignment and you plan to keep the car you should consider firestone lifetime. There are firestones that can do great alignments you just have to find one.

I found one in town that does a great alignment while the other two have done crap alignments. I talked to the one at the good location and he said his lead tech does all the BMWs.

They have "lifetime" alignments too. I paid $79 for a lifetime alignment. Did alignment before coilovers because I had to replace some suspension parts. Month later, did another one after coil overs. then another month later did a third when I mounted new wheels.

But now that I slammed my car, they won't touch it haha.

I got my money's worth at least.

Thing about alignment on BMWs is that the rear is tricky. Adjust one setting, others change. You have to constantly go back and forth between adjustments to dial them all in.

Front is only toe adjustment so it's a piece of cake.

Exactly "what do they do" in the alignment process? A quick "toe" job? I would expect that a BMW shop alignment would be thorough and include a steering angle sensor adjustment if required. This requires expensive, sophisticated diagnostic equipment. Does the dealership have this equipment?

ASK what the "alignment" is going to consist of.

Where's DSX when you need him? Here's a quick Hunter Engineering vid:

FWIW, got a postcard from my dealer today, advertising a 4-wheel alignment - $149.00, regularly $199.00

That's absurd but not the worst - my dealer originally wanted $199 but quickly agreed to shave the price to $149 (emphatically refused to go lower than that).

Fortunately we have local indy that only does alignments and charges $100 - he is a specialist and likely more competent than the tire jockeys who usually run these machines. The local tire shops will also generally do it for $100 more or less and some offer free recheck within 12 months so you are essentially getting 2-for-1 if you calendar it.
