Error Code P2610

Hi All I am a newbie to the forum from the UK

This is my first BMW which I have owned for a month.

Hence the reason for joining the forum, I was in work today the car drove fine on the way to work but when I was about to drive home it refused to start. It wouldn't even crank over.

I called a recovery agent who gave the car a jump start and it started perfectly well, but it threw up an error code which is P2610. The agent didn't seem to know what this code was so I was hoping that one of the members may be able to tell me what this code means and if it is a serious problem.

I would be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance

P2610 Engine off timing

I think P2610 is a hardware timer fault inside the DME.

Well that wasn't very helpful!

The P2610 could mean a problem with your ECU requiring re-programming by the dealer... But first, what year is your ride and how many miles/kilometers are on it? I suspect either a battery and/or alternator problem.... How old is the battery??

Hi Brewder

I have only owned the car for a month so I suppose the battery and alternator are the original parts.

The car has covered 95,000 miles. It has a full service history. It was making a slight grinding/whistling noise from the right hand side of the engine as you look at it from the front. If it does require a reprogramme how much is it likely to cost? The car has started and was driven 75 miles home from work and has started several times since without any warning lights or noises.

The BMW motorcar actually has a few more codes....HERE's a reference.

Yours is a generic code. For more codes not seen on generic readers, try HERE

P2610 is internal failure of a timer - possible emissions related issue covered by extended warranty. Possible ECU replacement needed - expensive!! What's the mileage?

What year is the car? If it's newer than a 2009, it may not be the battery... but if it's an older model, It could be exactly the problem.... Since it didn't start until it was jumped, I'm leaning towards the battery.

Did you purchase from a BMW dealer? If so, I suggest you ask them to pull the codes and tell you what's wrong.

As for the grinding noise... no idea... but sounds like either a brake caliper/pad/rotor issue... or, possibly even the wheel bearings.

Please forgive my ignorance but what is the extended warranty, is it something to do with the mileage ie 100,000 mile or x amount of years warranty. My car has covered 95000 miles

Its a 2006 320i model with 95000 miles. The grinding/whistling noise was when the car was static and idling. it wasnt a particularly loud noise but it appears to have stopped now.

I want to say the emissions warranty is 100k mi - I'd look into it sooner rather than later....
