Cold Start Burbler

As opposed to the Night Prowler (an ACDC great). Have a 2011 335i coupe, fab car but on first start of the day the right side tailpipe (passenger) has a very throaty burble (almost like a tuned up Corvette) for just a short while, probably gone within a few minutes, by which time alls consistent one pipe to the other. Local Dealer says something to the effect that the engine comprises two banks where one heats up first and then opens the second and thus there is nothing unusual in this - Does this sound legit please? Thanks, Mike

Yes. That sounds legit. I have heard or read something to that effect before where you will hear the click of the gate in the tailpipe once it warms up.

Almost....the flap creates greater back pressure when needed. 3 cyl 'banks' got not much to do with it....

Wanna change? Set your Google to "BMW Gold Tee Mod"

I tried it....didn't like.

There is a butterfly valve in the driver's side muffler tip.

This will be closed on startup so the cats can warm up faster.

It will open up a few minutes after startup and it will open and close as Cal has mentioned.

If the above occurs OEM, why does the same one minute burble occur with a Dinan (or axle-back) exhaust? There is no longer a driver side butterfly valve, and the valve actuator in the trunk is unplugged. Startup is wake-up-the-neighbors loud, but tones down to OEM quiet after 60 seconds.

Becuase the idle is increased at start up.

If you look at your tach on startup, the rpms will be just above 1000. After a minute or so, the idle will drop to 600rpm

That was my next guess. Appreciate the input.

Noise reduction

I was told by different dealers the flap is to make it more quite when first start, it opens when warms up. I took my muffler of and put staight pipes any ways and I disconected the flap because it started to make a rattle.

It does make it quieter when closed. But there are other purposes for that flap as well.
