Best year for the 335i?

Looking to buy a 335i in a few months.

What year do you recommend? I'm looking in the 07-11 range. Any kinks that were worked out in the newer model years?

If too unreliable, may just go for 325 or 328.

2010.

If I'm not mistaken, it was the last year of the N54 (twin Turbo) Engine. However, you still might be able to get a certified 2011 335i. That to me is a nice piece of mind when buying a used car.

2009 has the n54 twin turbo and also was before they took some stuff out. The 2010s had an awful amp-less audio system. If I were you I would find a CPO 2011 335i, that will give you a longer warranty and a 2011 is more likely to have all of the kinks worked out as it was the last year for the e90.

Mid 2009. Came with N54 but still had some pre-LCI as well as LCI bits.

For example, LCI E92 came with oversized "dumbo" side view mirrors. Pre-LCI, IMO look better.

Some 2009 will have CIC nav which is the newer HD based nav. Much faster and more options.

N54 is more tuneable than the N55. However, the N55 is getting there in comparison to N54 performance.

You might also get some LCI trim bits, like the newer style cup holders, radio and AC knobs, etc.

No bluetooth streaming on the navigation unless you get the 2011. Just something to point out

From the factory yes. It can be retrofitted by an experienced coder.

In an 05 Cooper S right now. Graduating soon and will be employed so want to upgrade to something a little faster

The 325 and 328 aren't bad either, but the 335 is obviously a step up from those. Would be awesome. Thanks for the advice

I also say late build 2009. I've got the killer sound, N54, some LCI bits as well.

Heh, definitely the problem child is the '07--I drive an '07. Factory ordered it.

EDIT:
On the positive side, pretty much all the problem areas of the '07s have been fixed on this car. The only remaining (major) area of potential problems are the turbo wastegates. I'm on the originals, going strong with 81 thousand miles.

Figured better to revive this thread than post a new one!

I ditched my Cooper S and am looking at 3 series more seriously now as I need a car. Question --- which will be less hassle maintenance-wise? 335i or 328i? I would assume the 328, but thought I'd get opinions of people who really know these cars. I'd be looking at 2009-2011. Looks like there isn't much disparity between the MPG numbers.... so that is cool with me. Thoughts on maintenance though? Thanks!

For regular maintenance (and not catastrophic failures of things like turbos, HPFP), the only doozie is the occasional walnut shell blasting of the intake valves. Expect about $600ish, every 40K miles (+/- depending).

Otherwise, the maintenance costs are extremely similar so far as my impressions go. The spark plug interval is about twice as often, but as the set cost me $69 the last time, I consider that negligible at every 90K miles. (Even if changed them a bit more quickly than factory rec.)

I honestly don't know how the LCI bits improved upon a car as old as mine. However, I have seen the decontenting years include omissions such as hood insulation pad, seat back nets, cargo hooks, and truck keyhole.

328i for lower cost of maint

335i for scoot - significantly more.....did I say more? How's 460 hp / 460 ft lb sound to you?

IMPORTANT POINT: 2011 suspension more compliant than 2009

IMPORTANT POINT: You'll be muich happier with a suspension + diff upgrade, either model

I'd skip 2010 due to cost cutting that year. Remember, both models have same suspension.

Cool thanks for replies!

Any reason why the sport seats and sport steering wheel are hard to come across on the 09-11 models??? I swear 9/10 I come across don't have it. The 06-08 seem to have the sport wheel/seats 5/10 times.

So far I havent had one single issue with my 2009xi. I absolutely Love every minute I spend in it. Wirh the AWD (a MANDATORY option), its quite a hoot when every extra horsepower goes right to the ground. This car is quicker than my c5. luvin every minute of it... as Loverboy wiuld say lol

I ordered it from Bellvue and had it shipped.with 18k on it. Has 45k now
