OK Oil Level Question

Anyone know how much I need to add with an ok oil level. I don't want to overfill so I'm coming here first.

With the car running you should see the bar graph. It only holds 6.5 liters. If you have a scan tool to view live data full with oil at 200F is about 73mm. Just add a splash if it's a little below the max line. Sometimes the oil level sensors are not 100% accurate. Hope this helps.

Do I see this? Your oil level ok - you want to add.

Don't do it!

If your electronic oil level says 'min', then only add 1 container, no more! It may take a bit of time with engine running for the oil level sensor to register the added one container of oil; so resist the urge to add another, and then another, and then another!

I didn't explain this properly. Sorry. It said "oil level ok"

the level it was showing was 3/4 way to max

I added half a qt more and now its right on max.

There are two measurements it takes.....static and dynamic. Static measures the quality of the oil when car is warmed and sitting there. Dynamic is the volume and the read it will give you after about 6.5 miles of driving. That is the measurement you want. If it says Oil Max when you check it after 6.5 miles, you are good. If not, add a half quart and drive it again until it reads Oil Max.

Since BMW discontinued the dipstick, a blunder IMHO, the one and only way to check the instrument is: Drain oil; measure volume.

Yup, dipstick does same without draining oil.

Axiom: The more complicated the system, the more pressing the need to check it. Accuracy. Calibration. Do you agree?

If you are going to top it off

If you are going to top it off
Only add a little at a time like .25 quarts.
Then drive it two or three times (20 to 30 minute drives )check the graph again and
repeat if necessary . The computer likes to contemplate the oil
level a long time before it updates the graph.

I get kind of psycho about this but I have learned to live
with it one or two segments under full.
That way I know its not to much or to little.

I do the oil change in my 328. Every time I change the oil I use 7qt + a new BMW factory oil filter. When I later check the oil, after the engine is warm and driving on a flat surface, it always shows "OK" at the 3/4 mark.
