Engine timing

Hi everyone,
Tried starting a '75 2002 I picked up. The car turns over but the motor comes to a dead stop during cranking.
Removed the valve cover and turned the engine by hand. Watching the the chain as I turn the crank, the chain and everything else move normally.
At some point, the engine freezes, impossible to crank further.Turning in the opposite direction and watching the chain the crank moves but the cam does not. Eventually the cam turns until it freezes again.
I removed the tensioner, it looks fine-there was plenty of pressure when I removed it.
Any thoughts? Looking for timing marks but I don't have the manual yet.
