What BMW's have you saved?

So how many/what BMW's have you saved from being parted out, sent to the crusher or a bad owner? We want to hear your story/ies and see what the car looked like before and after if you have pictures!

I don't have pics for all mine but here's my list:
2001-330ix 101,xxx (all it need was transmission cooler line) was sitting in a junk yard getting ready to be parted out. Paid- $3,500
1993-318is 242,xxx (needed an engine, put my m42 in it after I swapped in my s50) Paid- $800 Sold- $4,000
1987-325e 149,xxx (sit for 7 years, was being taken to crusher next week before I found it) Paid- $650
1989-325ix 152,xxx (being taken to crusher soon, needed relay) Paid- $800
1997-328i 162,xxx (being parted out, needed bumper, fender and hood) Paid- $1200, Drove it for 2 years and sold it for $3,800 for down payment on my house.
1994-318 vert 120,xxx (sitting at a junk yard, needed some TLC) Paid- $1,000 Sold- $3,500 3 years later.
1996-328 vert 85,xxx (hit in front, came with complete parts car in same color to fix it) Paid- $3,000 for both. Sold parts car for $800 after took parts needed.

So lets see what you got!

A whole bunch.

1992 325i 5speed with 279k miles; Bought for $600 due to torn out rear subframe and high miles. Drove for a year, parted out.
1987 325is 5speed E30; Bought for $900. Lemons/Chump race car
1985 635csi 5speed; Bought for $400. Got running/driving with spare 5pin main relay. I've been dailying it for a while now. Crazy bad rust, falling apart hooptie. Will drive tilll major breakdown, then scrap it.
1995 318ti $700/blown motor/auto; Chumpcar/Real race car
1995 318ti $700/no motor/manuali; My baby. Body up restoration, still in progress
1997 M3 $1800 auto; Bought for S52 and suspension. Car is horrible, all jacked up. The worst car I've touched.
1992 325i $500 manual; Drove it home running on 4out6. Everything is horrible, parts car bought for motor.

Heh, I usually take E36s and make them fit for the scrapyard. I think I've had 4 besides the current one and that's where they've all ended up.

Mein Auto: rescued bmw's
just cadence and the ti. both 95's.

the rest were all too far gone to be worth 'fixing', so i had to part with them.

1995 325i (purchased in 07 with high miles and blown shock mount)

1989 750il (drove it, used a parts car to try to save it, victim of hit & run, totaled)

1990 750il (parts car, didn't even stand a chance...never in running condition)

1996 328i (wrecked parts car, ti donor)

1988 535i (bought for jr df who did nothing with it, drove it for a bit, needs way too much work for me to put into an automatic.... became a ti donor as well with a 3.25 lsd )

not sure what i will do with cadence once the ti gets done. might put her in drydock and see about getting the corrosion sorted out and some other upgrades. i have another lsd carrier, so she may get fitted with that. not sure, though.

would like to get another ti and finish my supercharger build, though. too many project ideas and not enough $ ot time to get them all done.....

bmw's are like potato chips, right??

Well, I guess I can say that I am saving the one I just bought of eBay. I've bought several cars that way and never got screwed until now: seller ripped me off with the shipping by shipping the car COD after I had already paid for shipping (that was an extra $800.00). I finally got the car after six weeks; top doesn't work, battery shot, all brake pads, and center support is gone. Live and learn!

At least the drivetrain appears to be good, no rust, 138K miles, and a clean carfax. Wife likes the car so fixing/spending money is not an issue and I like to work on projects (keeps me out of trouble). Probably the biggest challenge will be to install a new soft top (I knew that was bad; the window is shot where is sewn in and there is some stitching above the rear bow is coming loose).

I will share my "refurbish" story here as I go on.

Other then the 99 328ic I had a 2000, 1602, 2500, 2800, and a 2002ti all a long time ago when I still lived in Germany. Some of those were good some were projects, especially the 2500 and the 1602.

Yes they were fun on the Autobahn and, although not the fastest, I had the most fun with the 2002ti. All of them were much easier to work on, none of the electronic BS back in the 70s.

I was complimenting on the older cars being far easier to work on because there wasn't as much computer interruption as their is now.

I just picked up a Laguna green '93 318is w/45k that I plan on bringing back to life:

I've already found a fender & door in green from the same year.

This will be my 6th E36, all saved/restored; but I've never had a 318 before.

Earlier this year, I rescued a 1-owner '94 325ic w/70k that unbeknownst to me had been sitting for 9 years (nothing wrong with it, just parked).

Here's where I taped half the trunk lid off and worked some magic on it:

This!! And I'm real good at wiring too, but I love a car that doesn't have much. That's why I built a base model ti. The harness is way smaller then the regular 3 series, even the 92's

I'm loving this thread. Keep them coming guys.

As for me I could say I saved my E36 from going to a bad owner, who knows. She was in an ok shape, auto, 143k miles, I have caught up on the most important maintenance and plan to keep her for a long time. Got her for $2k and have put maybe over $1k, after getting a suspension and brakes refreshment she'll be complete (minus a manual swap in the future) and will have invested almost $2k by then. I'm approaching a $4k car, could have bought one for $4k up front but I love working on her, I'm very happy with her. I give her some love and she loves me back.
