ĒconnectedĒ

Keeping drivers and passengers connected to the outside world while in their vehicle, is a big selling point for automakers these days. People canít be without connection, we require the ability to transfer and access information constantly, be it music, email, or even help looking for a good restaurant for dinner. Itís great that this technology is available to us at the touch of a button, or buttons, in many new cars. However, which automaker offers the most advanced connectivity to its customers? London-based Machina Research did the leg work in a recent study to find out. The study, sponsored by Vodafone, took into account the scale and sophistication of the connected car programs. The ranking looked at a combination of weighted criteria such as which in-car services are available, the openness of the system to developers, as well as the overarching purpose of the connectivity.

Of all the big automakers, BMW came out on top with their ConnectedDrive concept. BMWís ConnectedDrive is a collection of services and apps that allow for comprehensive, intelligent connectivity between the vehicle, itís passengers and the world around them. Itís not a big surprise that ConnectedDrive was found to offer customers the most complete connectivity approach. GM followed BMW with their OnStar technology. Coming in behind GM was Ford and their Sync system. The next three spots went to Audi, Chrysler and Daimler, in that order. Tesla held on for seventh, not due to poor performance, but low volume of sales. Toyota, VW and Honda rounded out the top 10.
