Weird squeak under downshifting and other problems

Hey guys,

I have a '98 323is with a few interesting problems. Looking for some advice

1.) The heat shield above exhaust is fully resting on the muffler. I was thinking of just ripping it out or buying some washers and bolting it back up. Anything negative about removing it?

2.)The driveshaft near the transmission is polished and shiny and there seems to be some sort of foam hanging down around it. Any idea what this is/how to replace it?

3.)There is an engine speed dependent whine coming from under the hood. I can tell if its a idle pully, water pump, or just the mechanical fan (hopefully not) running all the time. Any way to test to see which one?

4.)When downshifting and engine braking, there is a very audible squeaking noise that is there until I either disengage the clutch or accelerate again. No clue what this is, any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I would just replace the washers and put it back up its there for a reason.

I believe what you are referring to is possibly the foam that surrounds the shift boot. It may have slipped down you may just need to push it back into place. The shinny part on the driveshaft is more than likely the shifter resting or nearly touching the driveshaft when engaging in gears or as you drive. The vibration may be brushing the shifter on the driveshaft.

The whining sound may be coming from your alternator. It may be on its way out. The bearing starts whining until you start having battery problems. It can also be your idler pulleys. You can test those by simply removing the belt and spinning the pulleys themselves by hand. They shouldn't spin forever freely. They should stop after about maybe 4-5 seconds. If they continue spinning on and on then the bearings are worn and you need to replace the pulleys. But I am leaning more on the alternator bearing.

Your last question leads me to believe that your throw out bearing in your transmission is going out. They typically wear with time just like any bearing. You might want to check your clutch or actually might as well change the clutch since you will have to bring your transmission down for this job.
