2011 328Xi AT - Test Drive (Take 2 - E92)

So back from another test drive, this time black E92. A few questions/concerns:

1. The VIN check says it has a Hi-Fi stereo. The dash says "BMW Professional", ONLY right tweeter has "Harman Kardon" written on it. Is this consistent, something off here maybe?

2. Only right side mirror dips when bakcing up, is this normal?

Cheers! Thank you again. The car seems to drive well otherwise!

Someone might have just thought they were being funny and put the harman kardon logo on the right tweeter. You can look in the back and see if there are speakers in the rear panels, standard hifi will not have those. As long as you don't have the base stereo you should be fine.

And yes, only the right mirror is suppose to dip when in reverse. It's so you can see the curb and avoid hitting it with your wheels.

Do you midrange speakers on rear doors? The standard hi-fi on 2011 does not have these.
Do you have equalizing capability (tone control)?...If you have midrange speakers on rear doors and equalizing, the front tweeters should have H-K.

BMWUSA.com about the HK Speakers:
"Harman Kardon surround sound system $875
With vehicle-specific equalizing and powerful 420 Watt amplifier. The 13-speaker system includes four tweeters, four midrange speakers, two bass speakers located under the front seat, one midrange in the center dashboard and 2 midrange speakers in the rear door panels"

Right mirror will dip 'automatic curb monitor' and works when the mirror selector switch is set to the Left, but not when set to the Right.
So I set the switch Left if parallel parking, switch to Right when simply backing.

Quick responses - thanks. There's no rear doos (E92), but I don't see speakers in the back at all...
Here's the ad by the way: cars.com
Looks like Hi-Fi stereo?
My only other concern is the N51 (so SULEV model), should I stay away?

I would avoid SULEV models, they can be nasty to repair out of warranty. This car doesn't have the premium package either so no leather seats. You can find similar cars with premium package, heated seats and the n52 engine for the same amount of money,

Seeing as how I like to work on cars, probably let this one go. As I would probably try to DIY maintenance. The seats are leather I think (w/o premium package):

DIY is much easier on normal n52 models. I would keep looking, you can find a better deal. I would skip X-Drive unless you really need it. Transfer case problems are an issue and not cheap to fix.

Some of the SULEV measures for the N51 include:
Near engine catalyst with additional underbody catalyst
Secondary air system
Optimized combustion chamber geometry in cylinder head
Modified piston crown for lower compression
Plastic valve cover with integrated crankcase vent valve and separator (from N52KP)
Stainless steel fuel lines with threaded connections
Radiator with "Prem-air" coating
Throttle system - EGAS08 carried over from N52KP
Airbox with Activated carbon filter for EVAP control
Purge system pipes are made from "optimized" plastic

SULEV BMW's are equipped with vapor tight fuel tanks, stainless steel fuel lines, and some means to control vapor leakage at the engine.

And while the fuel pump is inside the sealed gas tank, From BMW's SIB 11 75 02:
"the emission relevant components are warranted for 15 years or 150,000 miles." The fuel pump and fuel filter both cannot be replaced without replacing the fuel tank, as they are welded together. So while the fuel pump is not specifically mentioned in the list of "Zero Evaporative Emissions" components, one could see that it would be relatively easy for a dealer to find a reason to replace the fuel tank if the pump were to fail. In fact, we have documented evidence of warranty-covered tank replacement for a failed fuel pump. http://chrisparente.com/2011/07/14/w...w-sulev-owner/

Having owned two BMWs which attained 140k miles, and having suffered the costs of unexpected repairs for each in the last two years of ownership, I don't want to own any BMW out to 150k, too much underhood heat and expensive plastic components to fail and need replacement and underhood plumbing to increase R&R time and expense!

Yeah I knew about transfer cases. I guess I will keep looking.
Not that many around without X-drive, unfortunately.

Wow, that is quite a story you linked! N51 sounds like a pain as a complete package.

As you can see, the 'changes' in the N51 is mainly the use of certain components (often used previously in other BMW engines) to help with emissions controls, passive devices that allow the N51 to have similar power/torque as the N52

The point of my history of two BMWs with 140k miles was that ANY BMW or any other car with that many miles is at a point in its life of needing considerable investment in repairs. The sealed gas tank and the inaccessible fuel pump really only become 'an issue' after the 150k mile point -- when fuel pump failure is more costly to deal with.
