Haven't seen this reported here before:

Press Release
BMW ConnectedDrive. Navigation map updates by mobile.

The system is regularly updated and this happens several times a year if a new map version is available. ... Installation is convenient and completely autonomous. ... No registration is required for automatic updating and users do not have to log on to a portal.

There are no licence costs for customers and no charges for data transfer.

This is great news. Is it available in the US yet? If so, how does it work?

Sadly it is not. And if you read it, you would see that it requires Next Generation hardware:

"...In conjunction with the next generation of the system, BMW ConnectedDrive permits a regular automatic navigation map update...."
