USB Thumb Drive vs iPod Nano

How do I load my iTunes library onto a thumb drive so the car (2008 550i) reads it like my iPod nano? Which folders do I transfer?

I've loaded my entire iTunes folder on it and the car reads all the folders, but the music hierarchy doesn't show up so I can see all the songs from the entire library. It wants to select from within the specific album folder of a specific artist only.

Anyone done this successfully and can guide me here?

Thanks

Is this content purchased via iTunes? If so, it becomes a bit more complicated, I think. I don't buy music from Apple, nor do I really use iTunes for anything other than backup/restore of some phones the ladies in my life (wife and mother) use.

Ultimately, you just need the straight file/folder structure of named and tagged MP3's dropped onto a USB drive. If you have access to them directly on your computer, it's as simple as copying them over to a drive and then plugging that into your Bimmer.

Depending on your firmware on the Nano, there are some different apps you could use to extract the music off and drop it into structured folders, separate from iTunes. Once iTunes moves music files to the device, it uses some sort of proprietary naming convention to store them, so the files and file names themselves are not easily copiable by humans.

Content is mixed: some I purchased and most I downloaded from CD's.
Right now the hierarchy is as follows:
Music folder-> Artist folders-> Album names-> Songs within each album

This allows me to play the songs from one album by one artist; it does not allow me to play Random songs from within the entire Library, which is where I want to end up.
So do I need to simply create a single folder and load Songs only in it?

TIA
