E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Piece of wood down auto trans well

You can't make this stuff up. Tonight I was working under the hood of my 1988 325 I had removed the transmission dipstick to check my level, at the same time I had a long slender wood pole to reach a washer that had fallen when a small chunk of it 1/8 inch think probably thinner and no more than half an inch in length wood splintered off and right before my eyes fell right down the well. I couldn’t have put it in that easily even if I tried, go figure bad luck. In any event, should I worry? Or is the heat of the transmission going to simply burn it off?

Again 1998 325 with auto transmission, what an idiot I am

When was the last time you changed the ATF. You can drain the the fluid and drop the pan. While your in there, change filter and clean the magnets/pan. If you leave it in there, It could get caught in the filter, valve body or gears.

Spoke to my mechanic

He said as long as it is not pouros it is stuck right above the filter with no chance of it getting out. I last changed the ATF three years ago when the transmission gasket needed changing. He recommends if it works for such an older car not to touch it unless it is smelly, burning or has changed color. Have already driven it for over 100 kms and he appears to be right so will leave it. If it ever starts to leak then will get it out.
