X5 Key Fob for X3?

A friend just purchased the new 2014 X5 which comes with a newly designed key (smaller, sleeker, better looking).

The reason to get Comfort Access is to keep the key in your pocket, not to carry around a large, cheap and clunky [X3] key.

Since I'm ordering anyway, I asked if I could order the X5 fob instead, or get an additional fob to go with the 2 X3 fobs. They don't believe that this is possible.

Thoughts on why? Seemingly it's just a differently (read: better) designed fob that would work on any new(er) BMW.

The keys are coded at the factory. They're not going to change the factory process just for you

Who knows about the technology in the key, it might be different.

Very good idea! I wish I too could have had the new key as this current 14' year x3 key is huge! But I wouldn't pay $200-500 on just a key. Unless I had no choice due to it being lost. Hopefully someone could see if this is possible but I doubt it.

I doubt they will let you order them from the factory... But i dont see why you couldn't order a new one from the parts dept, and have them code it to your car? Why wouldn't it work? Unless its a totally different signal or something.

I wish / hope it works. I hate the x3 fob, it's ginormous. I'd pay a couple hundred bucks seeing I use it every day.

You'd suspect they should be pretty universal but the keys hold specific information about the vehicle so it might be model specific.

Was the part number the same for both FOBs in previous years?

We previously had a 2006 330xi and a 2011 X5 ... both had identical (small, nice) key fobs -- so my thought is that it's universal.

My auto broker hasn't been successful in finding this out but from what he gathers it is not possible.

In the next few days I will do some leg work to see what I can find out. I also wouldn't mind paying a few hundred for something that can actually go into my pocket comfortably.

If anyone learns anything, please share!
