2001 BMW 325i DME Control Unit Question / Help needed

Hello guys, this is my first post here. Really like the forums and how helpful every one is.

I have a 2001 BMW 325i which has been parked for like 4 months when I went on vacation. The car is not starting any more... I have the car checked out by a local mechanic and they want me to buy a DME Control Unit. Its an expensive part.. more than $1300 from the dealer.

I saw a lot of DME Control Units for this car online in the price range of $100 - $150... do these things need to be programmed? My car is automatic and has 90k miles.

Any help I can get would be much appreciate. I was told by one guy who is selling this part...is that it does not need to be programmed... he claims its plug and play... but not sure. Thanks

Do you trust this mechanic? DMEs can fail but it's not common, and hard to believe it happened after sitting for 4 months. A dead battery would be more like it.

Replace the battery before doing anything else. Older batteries that have been stored for awhile in a state of discharge often do not have the ability to take or hold a charge, rendering them pretty much useless....

Walmart has a good replacement (94 R, IIRC), for around $125.
