2014 - 535 GT Display backlight won't function when hot

Some details..
My central display has been having issues as soon as the weather started going over 80-85 degree's outside.. Principally the backlight stops functioning or the display will start blinking until the car cools down. So where I live, I pretty much have issues 6-7 months of the year... no navigation, phone or any other display for 10-15 minutes of every drive.

The warmer it gets the worse the central display gets. (meaning the longer it stays off)

Additionally: The service manager did tell me that the identical vehicle on there lot had the same issues
The only repair the dealer did was replace the CD of all things, which of course did nothing of course)

Service Manager, and service advisor both tell me the behavior is normal ... incredible. Its only my 3rd BMW in this state... (there response literally came from the data returned from BMW)

I contacted BMW Customer relations. The told me after several days, and contacting the dealer, it was OK and normal behavior. Escalation yielded the same results? I can't actually imagine BMW has taken formal steps to tell me they would not service my vehicle...

Has anyone heard of the issue, or know of a solution? The dealer has absolutely no concept how do deal with the issue, and BMW has turned there back on the solution. (literally)

So at this stage, if anyone has any input, it would be appreciated.. (or an attorney that specializes in this may be helpful)... seriously.

It hasn't happened to my 2014 535i GT and it's been over 85 degrees plenty of times since I got it in October.

+1

Ours is a 2010 and the vehicle has seen plenty of 100+ days last year without this problem arising. Perhaps try another dealer to save yourself some angst (if that is an option).

It can even get hot here in the Great White North (Canada) and I have not seen this. As Ernset and daders have also not seen this it suggests a local problem in your GT. I suspect that a component in the backlight circuit has become sensitive to heat at the value that you citedncausing the symptoms that you have described.

I can't believe that the CD player was identified as a cause. All it does is send information from a CD for the display to use whether or not the display is working properly. The same applies to the radio, any external device and the nav system There is no direct link to the backlight from those components. I also cannot understand why was no test for the diagnostic computer to use to help determine the cause.

I would replace the backlight first and then the holder in which it is installed (assuming that is possible. If the backlight is integrated into the display module, then that module likely needs replacement. It is not rocket science.

That said, daders' suggestion about going to another dealer for a second opinion is a sound one. We have two dealers here and my dealer is overloaded with work, a certain amount of it from owners who bought from the other dealer.

Good luck and keep is all informed as you progress toward resolution.

This is making me angrier by the minute. The fact that you have a $60k+ luxury vehicle and the dealer/BMWNA is claiming this is not an issue or is normal is utterly asinine. Make their life difficult and let us know where not to purchase/service our vehicles...at the end of the day, our money is the only way we get through to jokers who think they can give us a line of BS.

You have a warranty issue. They need to fix it. If they refuse, contact your state's attorney general.

I thought everyone should see this email from the service advisor... it is absolutely incredible (after a BMW Tech from BMW looked ... or so they claim)

Good morning Corey, Keith our shop manager has been getting readings from the vehicle, dash temp which was at 205 degrees, screen temps, interior temps, and has driven the vehicle to note how long it takes the screen from going dim to normal. This is us doing research and data gathering,

BMW is not going to attempt anymore repairs and have said it is normal operation at this time.

Let me know when you are coming back into town and I will have it cleaned and ready for you.
Thanks
Stacey

I went on to ask about the other vehicles which would have the same issue (which there are none)... BMW is claiming its normal... you know...
