Is This A Good Warranty Deal?

An independent BMW shop referred me to a guy who does AUL warranties. He quoted me for a 5yr/50K extended warranty that starts with the mileage I have at signing. It has a zero deductible and is bumper to bumper except for wear and tear items. The total price is $3,250.00. I can also take the vehicle to any place I want to get work done. They authorize payment over the phone so there is no reimbursement plan.

Does that sound acceptable? Seems steep to me. I have a 2011 335is with 21k on it. The factory warranty will expire 7/11/14.

I'd research the warranty company to learn how well they follow through. Many of these companies do all they can to avoid paying for repairs.

That being said, you're looking at $650 per year for coverage on a car with high repair costs. One repair has the potential to recoup the entire warranty cost.

If the company checks out, I'd jump at it for peace of mind over the long term.

First, 'maintenance' is different from 'warranty'.
  1. A factory new BMW includes BOTH.
  2. A CPO includes 'warranty extension' (not all items covered), but not 'maintenance'.
Folks buying a CPO can get broader coverage than what CPO covers and for a covered period, at extra cost
Folks buying a CPO can buy 'included maintenance' for a covered period, at extra cost.

WHAT does your policy cover...both 'maintenance' and 'warranty'? or simply 'warranty extension?'
You already stated 'bumper to bumper' so we assume 'no exclusions', but just want to double check that is what you meant.
How many miles are on the car now, and how many miles do you expect to cover in the average year?

Only after getting precision on the definition of what is covered, then we can analyze the 'worth it' consideration for the money spent.

If you drive only 8K per year, at the end of 5.5 years you will have a total of 65k miles. MAYBE your water pump fails, but it might not -- until 75k or 80k. So you will have spent $3250 on a $700 repair.
If you drive the average 15K per year, at the end of 5.5 years you will have to total of 103K miles...and lots more stuff fails in that mileage range. Not only the water pump, but also the thermostat, the belt tensioners, A/C hoses, power steering hoses, windshield washer pumps, oil cover gaskets and oil filter gaskets, cyclone separators...are just some examples. and then if you have a more complex car with turbochargers, and iDrive and steered HID, that many more things can act up. But you still need a bunch of them to go bad in 103K to make $3250 worthwhile...and only if you have 'included service' in the coverage is the money spent suddenly less of an issue.

Make sure of what they cover. I've dealt with a lot of them. Some people buy them without reading and get all pissed off when they don't cover much at all. Read what it says. Not what the guy tells you. His job is to sell it, not be honest.

Why not just buy a BMW extended warranty?

I'm working on getting a comprehensive list of his coverage. I'm going to put less than 5k a year on the car, but do plan on some track days. The car only sees short city driving trips, so I'm thinking that may increase wear and tear. I was trying to stay away from a super expensive dealer warranty, but 3250 seems like it gets close to what a dealer would quote.
