Difference between Sport-pkg and M-sport

Hi.
I have 2011 335i w/ sport package. Wondering if I should have got an M-sport, as I am guessing this had better suspension (M3 ?) and brakes (M3 ?) and faster engine/etc.

Is the M-sport that much better than Sport-package?

TY

The M sport package is basically just cosmetic changes.
M-sport front and rear bumpers
M-sport door sill emblems
Sport style Steering wheel

The only other thing you are missing (correct me other peoples if I'm wrong) is an increased speed limiter (which you really wont miss), that is unless the sport package has it. I'm not super familiar with what the sport package has included in it.

Hopefully other people can add to this, but the two things you mentioned: suspension and more powerful engine, are identical in all 335i's. They all have the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder, and unless you specified that you wanted the "Sport suspension" or w/e its called, they will be the same on an M-sport and a non m-sport.

What bseebee said. Also for 2011 the M-Sport also had different side sills, anthracite headliner, different wheels (style 193 I think), and perhaps a slightly different steering wheel and shift knob (for manuals, of course).

Not all M Sports have the increased speed limiter. If you bought a 2011 xDrive and went with the standard All Season tires, you have the standard speed limiter. The All Season tires don't have as high a speed rating as the optional Performance tires, so BMW didn't install the increased speed limiter. To check to see if you have the increased speed limiter, look for the oil cooler, visible at the front of the right front tire wheel well.

You're right...The steering wheel between sport and M-sport is different (and not because of the little "M" but because it's a bit thicker than the Sport).

All xdrive models have the speed limited to 135mph.

This is becuase the sport/msport packages on xdrive models don't have the lower sport suspension

That's an interesting factoid. I'm guessing the lower suspension causes issue with the AWD system?

Nope.

Standard xDrive cars have the speed limiter and no oil cooler.
Sport pacakge / M-Sport package xDrive cars have the speed limiter and no oil cooler.

However, sport package / M-sport package xDrive cars ordered with the staggered summer tire setup from the factory come with the oil cooler and the increased speed option.

The differentiation is the OE tires, not the suspension. If you ordered the staggered summer tires, you got the speed lifted. Since most people who are buying an AWD car get the A/S tires instead of the summers, you don't see the increased speed option on xDrive cars very often.

No, the xDrive suspension rides a bit higher due to needing to get all the extra drive bits in place. You also get a much smaller well under the trunk floor.

not quite

X-Drive with summer performance tires from the factory- 155mph speed limiter and oil cooler

X-Drive with all seasons from the factory- 130mph speed limiter and no oil cooler.

has nothing to do with the suspension.
has everything to do with the tires

none of the all seasons that bmw specc'ed on the E90 had a high enough speed rating to handle 155mph. on the E90 they were typically H rated, and BMW set the limiter to the min speed rating that they were equipping cars with.

Ohh well I wouldn't want to drive a stock xDrive over 135 anyway since it has a higher center of gravity. It feels boaty as it is with normal driving.

The AWD components don't add height. The higher height is to clear snow. AWD won't help at all if you're stuck on a snow bank. That's why the front is raked, meaning it sits higher than the rear. This is also the reason why the xDrive models don't get the sport suspension with the sport or Msport packages.

Thank you for the info...I am relieved. I bought this car w/out doing any research on the BMW's. I don't like the suspension on my car, so I was kinda bummed I didn't get an M-sport. My car as increased speed limiter, but I don't like the handling enough to trust it past 120mph, until I do the Cal suspension upgrade
Cosmetics, I don't care about as long as the car is Black

Thanks again!

What don't you like about the suspension?
