Does not reverse......Problems

I own a 2007 328XI Sedan with 178, 000 KM and it does not reverse. I brought it to the dealership to see what is the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the cause?

It's probably the shift cables. I've had a couple friends with this issue.

Is it a manual or automatic transmission?

There are no cables in the F3x (or E9x for that matter). The controls are all electronic.

Older (E46) BMWs with GM transmissions had a notorious "no reverse" problem where the reverse gear/drum would prematurely fail. Probably the same thing, just not premature.

Then explain this...

I termed it incorrectly but this is a mechanical linkage that selects forward and reverse gears.

Another common problem with the E9x auto trans is the gear shift assembly wiring. The repeated heat cycles and vibrations crack the wire insulation and short the wires together. However, this normally causes a lose of sport mode and manual mode.

Guess I was thinking too much about my wife's new F30, which doesn't have one.

Reverse brake bands usually located in the front near the TQ may need replaced. $5.00 parts but $$$$ to take out and replace.

lol that's why you don't use the dealership.

Find a good indy shop in your area to do this work:

Just got the car back from the dealership. The gear selector valve in transmission was broken. So they replaced the gear selector valve, pan gasket, oil and sealing sleeve. Parts, labour and tax, all amounted to $782. (total labour hours indicated was 5).

Good deal! It costs half that just for the oil drain/replacement.
