Power steering going ?

Hi all, just lately I have noticed the steering doing strange things. For one, the steering takes a lot more effort most of the time .. but not always .. what is weird is it seems like the power assist comes and goes.

If the power steering pump fails .. would I not feel the steering stiffen ALL the time ? Or maybe the pump still has partial life some of the time ??

i.e. I am not sure what is expected for the pump failing ...

I would be interested to hear from folks that have needed that steering pump replaced .. and what their experience was like leading up to that point of replacement (of the pump).

thanks all,

Have you checked the level of the fluid in the PS reservoir as a first step? Maybe it's low and acting up?

+1 for checking fluid. Especially if you notice the steering feel changes when turning. It could be low on fluid and when you turn, it's starving the system/introducing air pockets which compress and cause a loose feel.

It could also be blockage somewhere in the lines flying around, getting stuck, then freeing up and repeating itself all over again.

checked the fluid .. it is ok .. nothing in the manual about it .. but my research/reading indicates that full (to top) is wrong .. i.e. that the level notch indicator on the dip stick seems to be mid resavoir .. so that's where the fluid level is now.

If someone filled it to the top of the bottle, that tells me someone somewhere along the line has screwed with it... possibly even topping it off with a non-standard fluid. If your bottle indicates CHF11s with a green label, it's pretty important not to mix anything other than Pentosin CHF11s.

I would suggest having your power steering fluid drained and a fresh fill. Then see what happens. The pump may be struggling due to mixed fluids in the system.

If you don't want to spend the $$ for a full system drain/refill... you can always try the "turkey baster" method. Suck out all the fluid you can from the bottle, replace with fresh Pentosin... Drive it for 5-10 min. Repeat that process 5-10 times and you'll pretty much have replaced all of the fluid in the system.

if you do the above, just replace the complete reservoir because it also has the filter in the bottom, and you cannot replace the filter alone.

its fairly inexpensive and an easy DYI
