Sunroof stuck open

Hey guys, first issue with my 328xi. Yesterday I tried to open my sunroof and it wouldn't open. But when I tried to open it the other way it would open. So I tried to open and close it and each time I did this it would open the right way a little more. But never all the way. Sorry if this is confusing I can post a video if I need to. Any help would be appreciated!

Sit in the driveway with the engine running and the car in park. Press and hold the sunroof button in the "in/up" position (push the button towards the top of the roof), as if you are trying to pop the back edge up. Hold it that way for at least 45 seconds or until the sunroof has run through the full open/close cycle both ways (open the panel / close the panel / pop the back edge up / close the back edge).

Let us know what happened.

Don't push forward (close) or back (open). Push UP in the center of the button, as though you were putting the roof in the "vent" position (where only the back edge is lifted up). If you do not understand what this means, read the sunroof directions in the owner's manual.

You need to press and hold the button in the vent position until the sunroof completely reinitializes itself. This may require up to 45-60 seconds before the panel even starts to move. You must hold the button depressed for the complete cycle through all motions...wait 5-10 seconds after motion stops to be sure it isn't about to do something else. If you release the button at any point in the cycle, the re-initialization aborts and you have to start over. The whole process can require up to two minutes in some cases.

You may also want to repeat the entire process if it does not restore normal roof operation on the first try.

Should I hear the motor running? Cuz when I tried that I didn't think it was doing anything because the sunroof motor wasn't making any noise.

The sunroof code means that the "anti-trap" function is currently disabled. When you hold the button up, you're telling the roof to run through its full range of motion, even though it's taking more power than it should. Unlike normal operation, where the roof will stop if it sees something stuck in the track, the "hold up and cycle" operation will drive through an obstruction.

The warning is telling you just that - don't put your fingers in the roof path or they may get crushed.

The warning light should stay on for the full cycle.

So I'm pushing up as in towards the roof correct? Not towards the front of the car?

Correct, as though you were trying to push the button through the roof, not towards the front or back of the car.

Up, yes. Not forward, not backward ... up.

Incidentally, this anti-trap paralysis can arise from really filthy sunroof tracks. While your roof is open, you might want to vacuum/wipe off any significant crud on the rails. (Do not lubricate it yet...you don't want any old grease that will just grab and hold more dirt. Search here to find acceptable "dry" lubricants.)

Not immediately. The control module may sit and "think" for a while before it begins to drive the panel motor.

That may mean a dealer/indy trip then. Funny that the cycle doesn't try to run, especially when you can get it to move a bit with the open/close slider.
