Navigation or Not

New member with a newb question.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2011 335 convertible with 17k mileage. this one does not the have nav system or idrive. should I walk away? Personally not an issue but my concern is sat radio interface.

Any advice/comments are appreciated.

Depends if its important to you. For me, the interface benefits + hard drive music storage are important, so I specifically looked at models with iDrive.

I have found, and so have our daughters, that Garmin GPS is typically superior to any number of car brand GPS built-ins

As previously said you alone can decide how important it is to you. With or without; cars that are otherwise equipped alike will drive the same.

I agree that Garmin navigation is superior most of the time. Even with updated maps, the Bimmer often tries to sent me the "long way around".

Nevertheless, I like the additional interface options and connectivity offered by iDrive enough that I looked specifically for a car equipped with nav/iDrive.

As said above, a Garmin GPS is far superior to the NAV system on the BMW.

From what I've seen, the iDrive is great for the following reasons:

1) graphical interface on service items
2) store music
3) additional means to select radio stations (extra presets & such)
4) dual screen mode is useful when using GPS.
5) additional trip information
6) great interface for phone
7) adds to appearance of the interior (in my opinion)

It sucks for the following reasons:

1) NAV system is inaccurate on time and occasionally route
2) If you turn the screen off at night, you can't visually determine the radio station.
3) plays DVD's but only when you are sitting still. I understand that this is a safety issue, but seriously, what's the point of being able to play them at all?
4) significant extra cost.

If you are a techie guy who loves gadgets and the price doesn't scare you away, I'd say to get an iDrive without question. If you prefer a cleaner look and a simpler experience, pass on the iDrive because you probably won't miss it. Even though I bitch about the NAV system, I think I made the right choice (for me) when I bought a BMW with the interface.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the responses. The nav is not important, I plan to use a dash/windshield mount for my Galaxy Tab. Will use the same for Sat radio.

Looking forward to learning and contributing on the forum.

Personal choice. My choice was to have nav only because I like the screen for music and my contacts for BT. Secondly, my son likes to watch the maps. However, for day to day nav I use WAZE.

My car has all that stuff; I don't use any of it. I use my phone for everything. I could care less about navigation in a vehicle, lol.
