Question Need advice on a 2008 335i

Hello.. I test drove a 2008 335i with about 47800 miles on it. It drove really good. It has a long list of packages, pretty much all the options that you could get. He is asking 20500 and I offered him 19500. He was fine with that price. The car seems to be in very good condition. There are few scratches under the front bumper and it is missing the tow cap from the front bumper.

He has also listed the car on eBay and the eBay autocheck came back with no incidents. A non-paid Carfax reports 21 records and I am not sure if that is normal or not for a car that is 6 years old. One other thing that worried me little was that I noticed very minor scales (like ripples) in the paint. I know that is not enough information, but could that be an indication that the car was re-painted? Or maybe it is normal on these cars.. I don't know.

I wanted to get your opinions on if this is a good price for the car and whether I need to do anything else before I buy it.

Thanks!

21 records can be when he went to bmw for maintenance. They register the milleage and it goes to carfax.

It can be when he pass emission test too.

Why dont you check KBB to see if its a good price for you area?
Also the vendor should provide Carfax report for free, if he doesnt then there is probably something wrong with the car.
That being said i would pay for the report before making a purchase.

Aha. Traps for young players. And no, BMW paint has no ripples, though orange peel was once a concern.

Let's get down to basics! Do THESE and during Indy's pre-purchase inspection, be certain he scopes the engine and pulls all codes with a Bavarian Technic or GT1 code reader.

Add'l info - note you're not that far from 60k mi walnut blast, if OD hasn't been 'modified'

.

I agree with CALWATERBOY. Also I would get inspected for frame damage. Keep in that carfax doesn't report everything. I can assure you carfax and autocheck won't mirror each other.

Thanks everyone for these awesome replies. It is a little scary but it all makes sense. I will co-ordinate a pre-sales inspection with the seller.

BMW paint is very easy to tell if it has been repaint. The original has the most orange peeled (ripple effect) out of every manufactory I've seen. So if a panel is smoother than the other this could mean it has been repainted and wet sand. I have seen this a lot times when buying a used car. If a good body shop repairs it, it would be glass smooth and shiny. Or a bad shop would be dull cantelope peel.

Just wondering if 19.5K is a good price for this car with 48000 miles assuming there are no issues with the car. I checked Kbb and it agrees with this price, but edmunds shows the TMV to be around 15k. What do you guys think?

Here are the options on the car:
- Navigation System
- Premium Package
- Sport Package
- Sport steering wheel w/ paddles
- STEPTRONIC automatic transmission
- Comfort Access
- Moonroof
- Heated front seats
- Park Distance Control
- iPod/USB adapter
- Logic7 sound system

Keep scanning the various websites like Autotrader and Cars.com. If you're patient the exact car you want; in great condition and at a fair price will eventually pop up.

Too bad, that is a nice car. Nearly identical to my black one. And I would not sell it for $20k! I put a dinan chip in it too so it is a very spirited car, fun to drive. If I had time I'd put in a limited slip in the back and there is so much torque out of this engine it needs it.

I bought my 2008 with a bad door ding right in the in the door crease. I took it to the shop and had it repaired, which including sanding and painting the door. It now looks good as new. Having you car painted isn't necessarily a reason not to buy.

Is it just me or does anyone else have a problem with the original post? The OP stated that he offered $19,500 for the car, the seller agreed with the price and then the buyer decided to get opinions about the car and the price. I find that situation a little disturbing. When the buyer offered an amount and the seller accepted it, a contract was born. Why has no one chastised the OP. If you were selling a car and this happened to you, would you just accept it or would you be angry? I guess I'm just old and no one's word is worth anything anymore.

Not sure I quiet follow your anger. I told the guy that I will buy for 19.5k but still needed some time to think. I also told him not to wait for me which is why the car got sold to someone else before I could get it. I don't have any hard feelings for the seller and he shouldn't have any hard feelings for me either. But thanks for your opinion though.

My bad, I assumed you negotiated a final price with the seller.

I am now debating buying a convertible instead of a coupe (I am in San Francisco Bay Area ) and would like to ask you guys about how much more should I pay instead of 19.5k if the same car was a convertible.

For a car in the same condition with the same mileage, I suspect it would be between 3-5k more, depending on options.

A very good car is being offered for 24.5k with 49k miles, 2008 335i convertible, black on black, premium, sports, navi, comfort packages... Should I go for it?

You seem to have a 2008 E93. Do you like your car? Anything I need to watch out for when I test drive this car? Is 24.5k a good price with 49k miles and all the packages that I mentioned? Thanks Group27...

Doing your homework on a big purchase is always a good thing. But sometimes you have to be a little more aggressive or you will lose out to another buyer who is not a fence sitter.

JMHO....

Only items that plague a 335i are water pump, fuel injectors and spark coils. I didn't count the HPFP as this is under warranty for quite a while. I would make sure that the owner had it serviced at 45k miles as that is when the spark plugs are supposed to be replaced. Also, make sure there are no leaks in the top (when it's up, of course), and, yes, the price is in the correct ballpark, I would suggest you move quickly if you like the car, as Shakeydeal said, you could lose it.

I've never seen an E93 in AWD, lol. The 435i vert now comes in AWD, but prior to the 4 series, BMW convertibles were not available in AWD. Now, you can't get a manual transmission 435i convertible!

I would never own a convertible... had one when I was in my 20's, hated it. Closest I would get would be a targa top.
