This may be controversial but after digging into the M6, why not just buy an M5?

Styling seems to be the only material difference. What am I missing here?

The M6 handles better than the M5. The weight difference and handling set up made the M6 my choice. Drive the two one after the other and see if that helps you decide. If you need a back seat, then the M5 is the car for you.

Drive them both, back to back. Plenty of differences.

I definitely need to drive them back to back. Love the lines and the sportiness of the M6, but I'm concerned that the back seat will leave something to be desired. I don't carry 4 regular adults often but would like the option. I currently have a 2007 911 and a 1997 landcruiser, neither of which are good options for carrying around business people.

Without starting another thread, have their been significant M5 changes since 2013 with the exception of the addition of the competition package? I don't see anything dramatic.

I don't know if the F10 LCI changes had any impact on the M5, and you'd have to ask the M5 community of other 'fixes'. The 2013 M6 coupe and vert had an issue with the steering rack (vibration) that was retrofitted in europe, here in the US you have to ask for it (corrected in the 14's). There was also a squeaky seat plate that got redesigned for the 14's.

The M6 coupe back seat is tight, but my two sons (6' 185 and 6'2" 195) did a 90 minute trip in the back, tight but usable. If rear seat room/access/comfort is a priority, then the GC is where you need to look, or the M5.

Styling for the M6 is certainly a couple of notches up from the M5.

I can't recall a more striking profile on a BMW since the M1.

The M5 is the great, powerful, competent sedan you would expect from BMW.

But the M6 is just a half a tick away from supercar status.
