Engine light that only appears at 5000 RPMs

Hey everyone, I recently bought a used 2008 335i. It's a great car and I love it, but I have started to notice this reoccurring problem... When I reach 5000 RPMs an engine warning light comes on telling me that the engine is not working to full potential. I have also noticed that it is much slower than normal (acceleration wise). I took my car to a local car and body shop because my city does not have a BMW dealership and they told me that they were not able to read the code. I have been told it could be the transmission, clutch, vacuum pump, or a misfire. I would just like to get some input from you all as to what this problem might be so I know what I am dealing with before I take it out of town to a dealership. Thanks!

Sounds like a misfire.

How many miles? I bet the intake valves need a wulnut blasting.

Could be the intake valves are fouled (walnut blasting). Could be turbo actuators.

How many miles on the car? The turbo actuators are warrantied to 82,000 miles.

Could be a lot of other things. You can't get much help here without the codes. If you're really that far away from someone who can read the codes correctly, you may want to consider getting the single-car version of this: http://bavariantechnic.com/buy.aspx for $180. Extremely useful for an E90 built in 2009 or earlier.

Preaching the truth. Codes are your friend [sort of] when you need a diagnosis. Unfortunately, as was mentioned, it could be one of many things.

Ditto. Too many possibilities, from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. We need codes to be of any real value with our opinions.

Bear in mind that BMW [at least where I am] charges $165 just for a code pull and diagnosis. Understanding you don't have a local dealer, buying the Bavarian Tech tool would be an investment and save you time, guesswork and money in the long run. When you get it, buy the one that includes three VINs.........then sent it to me so I can borrow it!!!! ;-)
