My wife has the phone operating about 90% of the time. Thanks
This may be off a little, but I believe you have to:

1. Make sure phone bluetooth is on.
2. Key in slot.
3. Foot off brake if AT or no clutch if MT to turn electronics on but not run engine.
3. Go to idrive menu for Bluetooth setup.
4. Look for devices.
5. Key in code for Bluetooth on idrive and phone. My 2006 can key in any number as long as car and phone match. My 2007 X3 needs a specific car code.
6. Hit sync on phone.
7. Wait for phone book to load.

It has been a while. I still have to sync my iPhone 4 to my wife's 530xi, but it works on my X3. My iPhone 3GS works in all cars.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. Both phones are up & running on the idrive now. Wife is happy, which means that I am too.

Great - I am glad it worked.

The idrive is nice, too. You can sort by name, top 8 numbers, etc. Nice system!

All iphones work with this car. It took me days to figure out why my iphone 4 wouldn't pair - I kept hitting the 'back' arrow on iDrive instead of 'CONFIRM PASSKEY.' If you're having a problem with the car pairing with an iphone 3G, GS, or 4 (I troubleshot with all - and all now work) try scrolling down and actually entering the passkey. I am so frustrated at my ineptitude. Good luck.

HTC Wildfire works...Samsung J700V doesn't

Phone model: HTC Wildfire
Car model: 2008 535i
[X] ability to make/receive calls
[X] phone book automatically synches to car
[X] dial by name (without verbal training of system)
[X] calling name display (using adddress book)
[ ] ability to send/receive SMS

The only glitch that I've noticed with my new Wildfire is that when I hit the phone button my steering wheel, the car seems to automatically redial the last number. It could be user error, since I don't make many calls from the car...usually just receive. I have a Kuda mount so access to the phone is really easy when I pull to a light if I run into the problem.

I don't know about the SMS...I've never tried to text from the car...not sure why you would.

The Samsung worked fine with my portable Garmin Nav I used with my previous cars and with a Merc C-Class loaner, but froze when connected to the Bimmer.

I had a Storm on my 2009 535i and now I paired a Storm 2. The secret is to click "confirm passkey" like one of the previous poster mentioned it. (That saved my a** as it didn't want to pai for nothing.

Have not tried the dial by name but the phone through the blue tooth is 10 times better than holding the phone to my ear and hanging up on my party because the phone thinks my ear is a finger.

I have had pretty much zero issues with my iPhones and my Nokia E71 (not the x version).

Unfortunately, not all Bluetooth compatible phones will work (partially or fully) with BMW's Bluetooth systems. As such, “Bluetooth” is an ambiguous term and insufficient to ensure compatibility. That is unfortunate, since "Bluetooth" is all that is typically included in the phone's description.

My experience is a good example: my do-everything SonyEricsson P900 does not work with my Bluetooth-capable car (the SonyEricsson P900 lacks a "handsfree profile" required to work with the BMW implementation of integration of cell phone and car). Successful 6 Series Bluetoth retrofit, but phone incompatible

Even if you have a "BT-compatible" phone with the BT "handsfree profile," there are other features that may or may not work properly. For example, the phone should automatically share its phone book with the car to enable a set of nice features: based on your phone's address book: Calling Name display and

Were you able to get the phonebook to download to iDrive from the inspire 4g? I just upgraded my phone from the iphone 3gs to the inspire 4g. The phonebook synced perfectly with my iphone but I'm unable to download the phonebook from the inspire. The iDrive reports "transferring data" continously. I can make calls just fine. Any help would be appreciated. I drive an '10 650i.

HTC Freestyle

I just got the new HTC Freestyle (a new semi-smartphone that does not require a data plan from AT&T). I've got 2007 525i and unfortunately bluetooth works only partially. I am able to receive/make phone calls, but phone book does not synch with the car.

I did thorough research. Unfortunately this is a pretty bare bones phone, but all the features work. I was afraid to choose outside of the recommended mfgrs due to that I heard Samsung phones will crash the display screen. You would think BMW would come out with a firmware upgrade to improve the voice module. Sort of irritating that it still sounds so impersonal and for lack of a better word (GERMAN)! Still love my car though.

I have a Nokia N8 that pairs quickly. Uploads my entire phone book and I could even use the speech feature to dial by name. I don't even have to say the full name and it gives me a selection that sounds pretty close to what I called out.. Pretty awesome! The only thing I can't do is send and receive SMS. I think only on the 2011 models has this feature. Anyone interested in a Nokia N8?

*FOR THOSE HAVING TROUBLE SYNCING CONTACTS!*

I think there is a solution to try here: Check to see if any of your contacts have a first name only. I went through my contacts diligently (over 500, as it is Active Sync to MS Exchange) and my phone (HTC Glacier - MyTouch4g) would NOT Sync contacts UNTIL I removed or fixed EVERY contact that had only a first name and no last name. Now everything is fine!
