E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

2011 135i conv. 6 speed manuel with sport package

My 135i which has been a joy to drive has suddenly acquired a whirring sound emanating from the right turbo I am guessing. What is this? Can turbos be repaired or adjusted? How expensive are they to replace? Thanks.

Welcome to Bimmerfest! I've moved your thread to the 1 series forum, you'll get more help in here. How many miles do you have on your 1er? Chances are your turbo is on its way out, it is a semi-common issue I believe. Search around, I think you'll find a lot of N55 engines end up needing replacements.

Well they can certainly be repaired depending upon the problem. An independent tech thinks around $800 for a rebuild. Replacement costs? Just ask at the BMW parts counter. A guess is it'll be expensive!

BTW, your 2011 is still under warranty, so you should be rushing over to BMW to get it fixed. BTW, you can purchase a power train warranty from BMW to extend it for another 3 years for $2,200. That may sound like a lot of money, but labor rates in my area run from $125 to $200/hour. Those hours can add up quite quickly!

The car has 58,000 miles on it and sadly is out of warranty. I guess I could extend now and hope it lasts a couple more months and then take it in.

A 2011 is out of warranty? It wouldn't be out of warranty until sometime in 2015.

BTW, you can only buy an extended warranty while the car is in factory warranty.

If you are out of warranty and the turbo needs repairs, expect to pony up a lot of dollars.

Turbo heading south

The car had 18,000 miles on it when I purchased it and a 4 year/50,000 mile factory warranty came with it. If I am entitled to more that is news to me. Thanks for responding.

I just noticed you have 58K miles on it. I forgot it is 4 yrs or 50K whichever comes first., so I guess you are out of luck by 8K miles! I guess you could R&R the speedo, but with BMW's computerized records that's probably out.

I'd check with the dealer to make sure. You should also have the problem evaluated. Sometimes just driving the car makes the problem worse and more expensive to fix.

You have an N54 Engine, and there was a class action suit over its issues. I understand that BMW gave an extended warranty, but I don't know the details. If your repair is very costly, you might have a basis for small claims.

When buy a used car, it is very helpful to buy a CPO. Here the dealer might give you an extra year or two on top of the factory warranty.
