E91 318D 2008 Overheating Issues

Hi My 2008 E90 318D gets very hot after 30 mins drive, feels very hot in the cabin
Looked at temperature in hidden menus and going above 97 c
getting no warning lights but clutch juddering in first, fine when cold
I have never seen the front grille open or the radiator fan come one, even if leave it idling for quite a while (effecient dynamics model so front grille stays shut till warmed up)

cooling fluid at correct level

My questions are

1. When does the front grille open and fan come on, and is there any way to test this ?

2 .could excess heat case clutch judder (does not judder on short runs

3. has the clutch got a cooling fan

Any thoughts most welcome
