Security Device for X3

Gurus,

I took delivery of my X3 recently and wondering what additional security and tracking devices people are using in their BMWs.

I know Lojack is one of them and many dealers sell BMWs preinstalled with LOjack but is it worth the investment? Do I really need additional security and tracking device in my BMW on top of what is standard from company?

I don't think you need any additional security devices. If you have the tech package I'm pretty sure bmw can track the car to begin with. There is a motion sensor inside the car. I think the only thing it doesn't come with is a shock sensor.

I was offered LoJack. LoJack may be easier to invoke if needed. But since I live outside LoJack coverage area it wasn't worth it for me.

Your car should come with a security system already and BMW assist is the same as LoJack.

Called BMW and they mentioned that they can track the Car after filling police report. Seems like Lojack is just duplication of tracking feature and additional device on top of what BMW already provides.

Thanks everyone for answering my questions. This is a great community.

Many people here in Colorado like Smith & Wesson. But there'd be no argument if you went with Sig or Glock.

Sorry...couldn't help myself.

When I picked up my car (with Technology pkg) they handed me some sort of document certifying the vehicle as having on-board tracking which is equivalent to Lo-Jack.

It would be nice if this technology provided an "Anchor Watch" function for which it is fully capable. For example, a few weeks ago my X3 sat unattended in an airport parking lot for 11 days. If it was stolen, it would have been nice to be notified as soon as it changed location so the BMW and the police could start tracking it. It would also have given me the peace of mind knowing I was going to find it when I returned.

The AAA has a very reasonably priced device that plugs into the OBDII port and, among many other useful functions, allows one to remotely track the car from any location. This ability is also available via the BMW iPhone app but BMW artificially locks it out "for privacy reasons" if your are located more than 0.6 miles from the car, negating its usefulness except for finding a car in a parking lot. If AAA has no concern about "Privacy Reasons" why does BMW? Even though this feature would not automatically notify me if the car moved, I could still periodically check it to be assured the car was where I left it.

It would be pretty easy to spy on your old BMW lease after you turn it in if the BMW assist account wasn't disabled of transferred!

Incorrect. LoJack works via radio frequency, not GPS. Ever had satellite radio or your gps navigation device not work because you drive under a bridge or go into deep woods? Same concept.

LoJack can track vehicles in places where GPS and cellular devices canít. The LoJack system can potentially find your car even if itís hidden in a garage, heavily wooded area, or in a container on a ship.
