Steering Wheel Play. Is this Normal? Video attached

This could be completely normal but my steering wheel has about a 1/2" of play. I know you can't feel it but maybe the video will help. It is a 2011 Xdrive50i with just under 50k miles.

That is not normal at all. With rack and pin steering, you should not get any empty spot in steering. The last time I drove a car is worse than that was my wife old 95 Volvo. Her rack and pin steering was completely shot. So I had the rack and pin replaced and it became normal. Take it to dealership if you still have warranty on the car.

Oh, change your power steering fluid. It will help prevent problems like this.

I'm taking it in tomorrow. I'm really getting frustrated with this truck. 500 miles left on warranty... Also FYI it has active steering if that changes anything.

What else beside the steering problem that cause you frustration?

It's been at the dealer 3 times for check engine light. It comes back every time within a day. Fuel injectors changed, HPFP changed, 02 Sensors replaced. Steering wheel play and now this.... Fun new camera malfunction:

BTW how do you like the Diesel?

I had the camera issue. The fix is to replace the cable from the back all the way through the vehicle to the front: either driver side, if you have Top View, or passenger side if you don't. Its a pretty involved job because they have to remove a bunch of panels to route the new cable through and if your X5 is like many others, you already have enough creaking and squeaking panels as it is. Since I knew they would have to tear into my interior I tried checking both ends of the cable to see if the issue was there but it wasn't. I jiggled both connections while the camera was on and couldn't reproduce the issue. I then looked into doing it myself but after seeing the cable is like 30ft long and $225 (!!!), as well as being under warranty I took a chance and hoped the guy who did it was having a good day. They did a good job so in the end i was happy. Im not sure what the actual issue with the cable is. It was definitely heat and/or humidity related because it never happened in the winter... only summer. BTW, here is a TSB for the issue:

Diesel is fun when you don't have to change gear. So for every day traffic it is quite good. I do miss the high revving a gasoline engine offers. It is also an engine I can live with every day and don't feel guilty of driving an SUV.

Although, I got to say transmission feel lazy unless you put it into sports mode. I think that is the case for all current bmw.

Dealer is telling me the play is normal with active steering. Is this possible?

Take it to an independent BMW shop that does warranty expiration inspection. It's like a PPI with focus on mechanicals. This way you either get a list of stuff that needs repair or peace of mind.

I find that hard to believe. I test drove one with active steering a long while back and I don't remember any play in the steering.

When I am told something is "normal" (and I know it's not), I just take a stroll out to the lot with the SA to see how "normal" it is. It's quite often an AH HA moment for the dealer. One of my cars (not a BMW) had the same issue. I believe the rack was replaced, and all was well. Good luck. Again, I would ask to see that "normal" in another car.

I had him play with the steering wheel but he kept moving it left and right too fast. If you swing it back and fourth past the point of the play you wont feel it. The only way to see it is to lightly rock it and then the slack becomes apparent. He also said they had another car with active steering and it did the same exact thing but when I got there it was "too late" to see it. Now I am waiting for another car to come in so they can show me, unless TinyRK posts that video first and I can show them.

Anyone care to take a guess at what could be causing the play mechanically? I am just curious what components failing could cause this issue? I don't have a great understanding of the steering system with active steering.

It's the rack and pin. Most likely something got chipped in there would cause a problem. With active steering it could the gear changer. What you should do is see if you feel the dead zoom changed with speed.

There is always the same play regardless of the speed.
