umm No disrespect but it looks like a regular 540/6. which are more common than a e34 535i/5.

Now if you said it was a msport. Then I can see you commanding your asking price.
But its not. your missing a few things to qualify in that category.

A 540 msport in prestine condition can get 8k-10k+ depending on some variables.
A regular 540/6 roughly 3-5k in prestine condition lightly modded.
since you have a transmission issue and paint fade expect less than 4k as a starting point.

If you're confused in what I mean or thinking I'm jerking your chain.
google
e34 540 msport.

Again I mean no harm. But I think you should understand the difference and how it compares to the asking price.

nice e34 though.

+1 Same thoughts here aswell. Rare would be a M-sport or really rare would be an M540i. Theres 1 in M540i in Texas.

That's fine. I got your pooint. I knew it is not M sport. I know it is a regular 540i/6, but it's still very powerful, rare and grete car. I was talking about regular 540i/6 I've seen for more than $8500. M sport are $10,000-20,000. I see e30 325i on the craigslist everyday for $5000, $6,000 and there is nothing special. There are a lot of e30's on the road. They are grate cars, but people pays for then good money too. Me e34 is lot better than e30 and the price is not just about comparing with e30. Its clean title rare e34. And it worth $6,000. $3K-$4K its the price of e34 525, 530. You know that 540i/6 is hard to find. And You know how special and grate car it is. It have been living all it's life in California. It means that the body is grate! No corrosion! It's probably possible to find one somewhere in new yourk for $4K but the body will be dead. I do not want to foce anybody to buy this car. My friend gives me $4K right now, but I need money, and do not have a job right now. So I can't afford to sell it for that much money as I know that it worth more. Maybe not on KBB, but people sells these cars for even more than $6500. Good luck finding e34 540i/6 for $3500!!!!

Dear MySatinDoll! I hope you have some time for your friends and family after you write that kind of long and emotional replies on this forum. You don't have to proove anything to me. Its my car and my prise. Next time just don't waste that much time, because it doesn't look nice. I see you are a grate mechanic and bmw enthusiast. You know how to buy cars for one thousand and put a few hundreds to get good riders. I am happy for you! But I am selling my car and put my prise. You can ignore it. It will be ok!

I was nice in the beginning.
But you got all emotional and stuff why we all agreed 6k is much for a car with a trans issue.
Then you tried to talk slick in the same breathe Like I don't know what I'm talking about.

If this was BF.C, the last thing you'd need to worry about is lil' old me.

I tell you what. I'll be the bigger man.

I'm sorry I said your car is worth 4k-4500 because it has a trans issue which will be difficult
for the average person to deal with.
I'm sorry I said your car can't be compared to a e30 because a e30 is more desirable to enthusiasts.

Matter of fact I'm sorry You created this thread for if you really want the truth.....

The classified section is here:

We thought (at least I thought) I was trying to help instead you go upset.
I can't help you with emotions just e34s.

Good luck

There are a few 540i/6 near me for under 5k, here is one, and it is beautiful. Yours has a few more upgrades.

Got my clean 540/6 cali car for 1900$.

There worth 3-4 on average 5-6 if under 90k miles now IMO, i stalk the CA market frequently.

This thread is awesome. lol. I wish my totally redone 540/6 was worth it.

5-10x a year one will pop up on CL alone, tho i think they are far more rare than a 535/5.

Other than that, i agree with MSD.

Dude, this is the second time you are trying to price 'pristine' 540I/6 within 3-5K. Do I sense some jealousy?

The matter of fact is, you will not find any 540I/6 in pristine condition in that price range unless you steal it.

If you are lucky, you might get a beat to **** rust bucket.

Pristine means no rust, no body damage of any sort, great shiny paint and perfect mechanical condition.

$6K? Maybe. But from what I seen the market is filled with **** and people with really clean cars are not going to let them go for $6K.

I think you confuse asking, with selling prices. For mine, ask was 3000$ sell was 1900$

Jealous...Wut?!?
Are you talking 540msport or 540/6?

I know your not serious with the comment.

Your acting as if you can't find one in that range?
It depends on what type of buyer you are and if your buying from an enthusiast or a common seller.

It also depends on where you look. ie buying cars here in NJ/NY/CT/PA/MD you'll find rust buckets.

but just to prove a point.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4557001936.html

"tree sap" and "belts" That stuff is extremely minor. Which goes back to my first point.
Things a buyer can live with and fix on there own. It has a maintenance history.
And it's listed as "open to negotiations" Which possibly means you can Steal it under 5k
So considering your point and what I just linked. Do you still think it's impossible?

Now let's use the alpine 540/6 I linked and compare to the OPs car.

Which would you buy?!?

Edit:
Let me cut you off before you try to counter the tree sap and belts with your description of a pristine condition car.

A buff and treatment will get the tree sap off. Replacing a belt is one of the most easiest jobs you can do on the engine.
Both are things most enthusiasts will ignore to get their hands on the car, correct and list as being pristine. Or post "hey look at this 540/6 I got"
And you'd never know it had such minor issues.

So in the eyes of most this alpine e34 would be considered a great buy with little to make pristine.
Would you consider that Pristine?!? Or would you discredit the car for such very very minor issues.

Also let's look at the market.

I've done this.
KBB is only a starting point for a asking price. Not a sale price.
There's also a black book which cars sell for at Wholesale.
And let's not talk wholesale pricing. It will break your heart.
That said let's continue.

First take the enthusiast interest out because it's a bias we all have.

M5s and highly modified e34s command the top dollar in the US e34 market.
Of course this is upset by the unicorns that happen to stumble across the border.

Anything under that Must compete with the e39. (with the exception of the e39 M5) which can be had for as little as 1800- 8k condition/model depending.

This is because the average buyer isn't going to pay 5k+ for a almost two decade old e34 540/6 when they can get a e39 540/6 with less miles,
age and hell it's newer for around the same price.
As well 5k+ is in Low M5/msport territory.
There's been plenty examples of that on cl and the boards over the past 2 years.

Look at what happened to the e28.
You can get a decent example of a late model e28 for cheap.
This was because of the e34 drop in DV.

As well you have to factor in how many are left in circulation.
This is easy by checking the street market (craigslist, used car sales websites, local paper, junkyards, etc)

Lastly you throw in the enthusiast factor.
How many people are looking for or selling that specific model.
Now this is soley dependant on my point "what you're willing to live with."

Sure you can find a absolutely flawless e34 for high numbers.
But How long will it sit till it sells.
How much more will it depreciate? Does the owner use it as a daily.
How much more wear will it take on before it sells?

The e34 line aren't classics yet.
OP brought up the e30s aren't special... Well they are classics.
So their depreciation value should have hit bottom (which they have) and start to go up in price (which they are)

The only e34 models that are classics are any model built from 88-89. (oops Just caught that)
That still is amiss because the entire model line will not be classic status for another 6 years.

Now lets bring this home because its getting side tracked.

Alex,
It's going to boil down to a argument between text book definition and opinion.
Which for intensive purposes is a matter of opinion when it comes to a 18-26 year old e34 which isn't a msport, M5, unicorn or a classic.
So it's truly a matter of "beauty is in the eyes of beholder".

He aint bought it yet, still getting things in order, doesn't know if he can, i would, but.... I love the car I have and some day it will have a 6-speed, only for my pleasure because I'm not planning on selling it so i personally do not care if it is a "true" 6-speed. You start getting into dirty work on a car you have always wanted and it grows on you more.

I feel the same way.
When you put time into a car e34 or whatever.
It become an extension of yourself if not a loved family member.
My kids still miss my black e34....... and I actually do to.
That's what I mean by enthusiast value. It's emotional.

If taken in consideration I'd say all e34s are worth well over 5k (well except those needing serious mechanical or cosmetic work).
I don't want anyone to think my standpoint is anti-enthusiast value or anti-e34 admiration/troll.

It's not.

I'm probably more Pro-e34 than most.
I just try to give both sides to the story, a devils advocate of sorts.

That said, My cousin still hasn't come for the black e34 yet.
Deep down I hope he doesn't.
For I recently added another notch to my belt by pulling a engine and trans out of
another e34.
If I keep it and put it back together it will become a dedicated track car.
Idk. But right now isn't the time. I have other things to tend to.
