Towing Advice For 2015 X3 28Xi

Just got my 2015 X3 28 Xi with BMW towing installed. I have never towed anything before, first to towing.

I was reading the owners manual and it says some thing about turning off all collision warning, blind spot monitoring etc.. before towing. It does not clearly say if this is for towing other cars using the BMW hook or for towing trailers with the installed tow kit?

Any one with experience please advise.

Thanks.

I would suspect that whatever you'd be towing would interfere with their functions, however the techies here will probably have a more definitive answer.

What is it that you'll be towing?

I have a 5 x 8 trailer I've pulled many times with my 2011 X3. Not much to it really. Allow for longer stopping distance. If they programmed it correctly you should be able to use the backup camera to view the hitch when hooking up the trailer. This is very useful for lining up the ball with the trailer.

Thanks Doug.

Do you have to disable any of the collision warning systems or blind spot monitoring etc. before towing?

My X3 does not have all of those features. However I don't have to disable anything. The car is probably smart enough to disable selected features once the trailer is plugged into the harness. I have found that it's best to turn the car off, then connect the trailer wiring harness and then restart the X3. When I follow that sequence the backup camera and sensors know there is a trailer back there.

The blind-spot monitoring system relies on side radars that are located at the rear sides of your vehicle, behind the fascia. When you connect a trailer, the side radars are no longer located at points where they can properly monitor whether anything is alongside your combined vehicle+trailer. So the system cannot properly warn you.

I assume the owners manual instructs you to turn off blind-spot monitoring when towing because, by turning it off, you are saying "I am aware that I cannot rely on the blind-spot monitoring system." Otherwise, you might rely on the system's lack of a warning and change lanes when a vehicle is alongside the rear portion of the trailer (a false "no alarm" from the system). I suspect BMW doesn't want the legal liability of you doing that and then claiming that you relied on its monitoring system to your detriment.

I am not well versed in the collision-warning system, but similar issues probably arise there also.

towing the small U-Haul is very easy while moving forward! I recommend opening the back hatch and drop the rear seats for better rear visibility. check your surroundings, be patent, and don't get flustered. Backing the short wheelbase trailer will be a challenge.
